Wilson Clay Wooten

Wilson Clay Wooten (Bill), 92, of Anderson, South Carolina, passed away peacefully at home on
March 7, 2018.
Bill was born on August 29,1925, in St. Louis, Missouri, to Lenora Rodgers and Clay Wilson
Wooten. Bill grew up in Indianapolis, Indiana, and was raised by his Grandma and Grandpa
Rogers. He served for three years as a radioman and yeoman in the United States Navy during
World War II. He fought in the battles of Leyete Gulf, Luzon, and Okinawa. Shortly after, he
met his wife, Esther, at the Central Business College. They married in June of 1948, and raised
two loving daughters, Kathy and Deb. Tragically, Kathy passed away at the age of twenty-two
in 1975. Bill retired as the purchasing manager at Central Supply Company in 1987. They
resided in Indianapolis until ten years ago, when Bill and Esther moved to Anderson to be closer
to Deb’s family. He was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church, and belonged to the
LST association. Bill was very proud of his time in the Navy. He enjoyed spending time with his
family and friends, loved music, and always had his radio nearby.
Bill is survived by his wife of nearly seventy years, Esther (Branham) Wooten, his daughter Deb
(Wooten) Herman and his son-in- law, Ken Herman, of Clemson, South Carolina, as well as his
grandchildren, Andrea, Jessica, and Clayton Herman, all of Atlanta, Georgia.
A celebration of life will be held at St. John’s United Methodist Church in Anderson, SC on Saturday, April 7, 2018 ay 1:00pm.
