Barbie Whittaker Basham

October 23, 1962 — February 4, 2021

Barbie Whittaker Basham (born October 23, 1962) passed away the evening of February 4th, 2021, at her home in Union, SC. In her final days, she was surrounded by her loving family. She is survived by her husband, Harrod Basham (with their puppy Jameson) of Union, SC, her son Billy Askins, of Charleston, SC, daughter Julia Askins, of Surfside Beach, SC, her parents Robert and Betty Whittaker, of Piedmont, SC, sister Leanda King (Marvin) of Powdersville, SC, sister Becky Lunsford (Jeff) of Seneca, SC, brother James Whittaker (Debbie) of Greenwood, SC, sister Kathy Ware (Howard) of Conway, SC, and many loving nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother Mary Lou Phillips (Sam), and grandparents Julia and James Whitaker, Dewey and Ruth Robinson, and Lyda and Edward Bushard.
Barbie was a one-of-a-kind woman, known for her sassy attitude and infectious laugh. She loved to entertain, and anyone who ever came to her house was made to feel at home. She was the type of woman that drew you in, and could always make people feel included. No matter how big or small, everything with Barbie felt like an adventure. Her friends knew her as kind and warm, and she never hesitated to call things as she saw them. She spent a lot of time in her life volunteering at various places because she wanted to give back when she was given so much. Barbie was beautiful, stubborn, thoughtful, spunky, and unapologetically herself. She always said her biggest accomplishments in life were her Billyboy and Ju-Ju Bean, her children. The long phone conversations, her laugh, the way she said “girlie girl”, her support (lavender), her gumption, and her love will all be missed.
A service will be held on February 20th, 2021, at 1:30 PM, at Greenville Memorial Garden Cemetery, where her ashes will be placed in her mausoleum. This will be a masked and social distancing service. If preferred, donations may be made in lieu of flowers to Fostering Hope, a cause she felt strongly about. If you would like to make a donation, please write a check made out to Fostering Hope and mail it to 308 Elm Street, Conway, SC 29526, with in-memory of Barbie Basham in the memo line. The family would like to thank everyone who has visited, called, and messaged, for the support and love for Barbie and the family.
