Brett Alan Ludwig

January 19, 1972 — January 11, 2020

Brett (aka Brent) Alan Ludwig, age 47, of Easley, SC, died early Saturday morning, January 11th, 2020 in Greenville, SC, of cardiac arrest resulting from a battle with cancer that began in 2017.
Brett died just a few days shy of his 48th birthday which would have been January 19tH. Brett had a large and complex family, including three parents. His biological parents were William (Bill) Gasaway and Gail (Gasaway Ludwig) Coffey and his beloved adoptive father, B. Kurt Ludwig. Brett was born in Gail’s hometown of Chillicothe, Ohio on January 19, 1972. Brett is survived by three half-siblings, Beverly, Terry, and Billy Gasaway. Brett also had two whole siblings, Jim (deceased) and Angel Gasaway Ludwig (surviving).
He is survived by his mother Gail, his sister Angel, his beloved nephew Alex Ludwig, his former wife Leslie Rodgers Ludwig, his five beloved children: Ariel Leavitt, Alexis [Lexi] Ludwig, Brandon Rodgers Ludwig, Zachary [Zach] Markham, and Paiden Jackson; and his two beloved grandchildren, Elijah and Latwayne Jordan (AJ). He was predeceased by his beloved grandparents Donald and Esther Shewalter, Beman Ludwig; his fathers Bill Gasaway and Kurt Ludwig; and his beloved brother Jim Ludwig.
Brett started school in Albany, Ohio but moved to Marietta, OH when he was 8 years old. He lived in Arlington, VA for a couple of years of middle school but moved back to Marietta where he eventually dropped out of high school. He enjoyed construction work and doing delivery work for restaurants. Brett moved to the Miami area in the early 1990s where he married Leslie Rodgers and lived for sometime. He also lived in Piedmont, SC for about 7 years in mid 2000’s. He returned to Marietta, OH to live at home and help Kurt as he underwent his own cancer treatments around 2010. After Kurt Ludwig’s death in 2017, Brett moved to Welcome, MN and learned that he did not like that much cold and that much snow and that much winter. In March, 2019 Brett moved to Easley, SC where he had friends and acquaintances from living in Piedmont.
Brett enjoyed fishing, telling a good story, and barbecuing for friends. Brett seldom met anyone he considered a stranger. Many considered him a friend and many tell us he saved their lives. In spite of his many friendships, his favorite animal was a wolf because he felt he was a “lone wolf.” His biggest disappointment was not getting to travel outside the United States.
Brett’s ashes will be buried in a plot beside his grandparents in Frankfort, OH at a time yet to be determined. Because Brett lived so many places and knew so many people, we are offering an online memorial service where you can reminisce about the experiences you had, what you most recall about Brett. Please leave your favorite memory of, or story about, Brett on his Facebook page (realizing he has minor children, so please keep it PG) so his children can understand the breadth of friendships he had all around the United States.
Since cancer took the life of Kurt Ludwig, Jim Ludwig, and Brett Ludwig, any donations should be made to your local organizations that support cancer patients.
We offer a special Thank You to the Prisma Palliative Care Team that provided honesty and caring support to Brett and his family as he made his way through the many decisions about what kind of treatment, how many treatments, and how to manage the never ending pain of the disease.
Words that sum up Brett’s life: I did it my way!
