Edward "Ed" William Mewing

June 26, 1929 — January 6, 2022

Edward (Ed) William Mewing passed away peacefully on January 6th at the age of 92. Born June 26,1929 he was the son of the late William and Johanna Mewing.

Ed grew up in Scarsdale, New York and was a star high school baseball player and was drafted into the Majors. He elected instead to continue his education and attended Ursinus College where he majored In Education and lettered in both Football and Track. He was a member of Zeta Chi Fraternity.

Following college, Ed served in the US Army Signal Corps during the Korean War and was stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska tracking Russian planes. While there, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and the outdoors. Many years later he and his wife would return to allow him to share the beauty of Alaska with her.

Following his honorable discharge from the service, Ed took a position teaching. While working,
Ed completed his MEd. at NYU. He taught and coached for over 40 years, most of them spent in Norwalk CT. He was both a coach and mentor to many young men including basketball great, Calvin Murphy. In addition to teaching, Ed built custom and spec homes in the summer months. A skill and passion he passed on to others.

In 1958, Ed married Dorothy Presdee. Together they raised a family in Wilton, CT where they resided for 32 years in the home that Ed built. In 1994 they moved to Simpsonville, South Carolina to be closer to their grandchildren.

In addition to being a caring husband and father Ed was an avid outdoorsman. His greatest joy was spending time on his property in Upstate, New York tending to his garden and enjoying hunting on his land.

Ed leaves behind his loving wife of 63 years, Dorothy. He also leaves behind two daughters, Wendy Pavia and her husband Anthony and their daughters, Ashley, Nicole and Sophie; and Nancy Stafford and her husband David along with their children, Ryan, Kelsey Nelson (Michael) and Sarah Stafford (Curt Harper). He was the proud great-grandfather of William, Jack, Hattie and Margaret (Mae) Nelson. Ed also leaves behind his sister-in-law, Gwen Man, and brother-in-law, Thomas Huebner. He was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Gladys Heubner.
