Gabriele Scheiber

Gabriele (Gabi) Scheiber died on September 23, 2020. An inexhaustible traveler, a voracious reader, and a formidable friend, she is greatly missed. Gabi was born in Eisenerz, Austria, and earned her master’s degree in German and English Languages and Literatures from the University of Klagenfurt. She moved to Greenville, South Carolina, with her husband, George William (Bill) Koon, in 1989. There, she taught German language and literature at a variety of institutions and levels. The city became her home-base for extensive travels in Europe, North and South America, and, most recently, Asia. Gabi’s insatiable wanderlust was equaled only by her appetite for news and politics. This intellectual intensity mirrored her emotional strength. Her relationships with family and friends were fierce. They remain dear to those closest to her. Gabi is survived by her daughter, Mattea Scheiber Koon, and her brother, Horst Scheiber.
