Henry Alan Elmore

Rev. Dr. Henry Alan Elmore, 80, of Greenville, SC, passed away on Tuesday, December 11, 2018. He was the loving husband of Dorothy (Dot) McGill Elmore for 56 years and was a retired Presbyterian Minister, having served the church for 40 years. Alan was born on November 1, 1938 in Charlotte, NC to the late William Henry and Margaret Elma Bailes Elmore.
Alan is survived by his wife, Dot, their daughter Allison Elmore Thornton and her husband, Steven Randall Thornton, and children Rachel and Laura of Dunwoody, GA., and their son, Daniel McGill Elmore and his wife, Patrice Vaughn Elmore, and children Bonner and Colin of Fountain Inn, SC. William Douglas Elmore of Sacramento, CA and Margaret Elmore Turner of Fort Mill, SC are Alan's younger brother and sister.
Alan retired to Greenville, SC in 2001 where he served various interim pastorates, taught in the OLLI Program at Furman University, and served as teacher/consultant to congregations in the Presbyterian Church (USA). Outside of work, Alan enjoyed swimming, hiking, reading, listening to music, traveling to many US states and other countries, and spending time with family, especially at Litchfield Beach.
His service to the Church includes; Elder and Clerk of Session of John Calvin Presbyterian Church in Florence, SC; Associate Pastor at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Greenville; Pastor of Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church in Kingsport, TN; a sabbatical years as Pastor of Johnsonville Union Church in Wellington, New Zealand; Pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Greenwood, SC; 12 years as General Presbyter of the Presbytery of Charlotte; and interim pastorates at North Anderson Community Church Presbyterian, First Presbyterian Church in Anderson, and Fort Hill Presbyterian Church in Clemson. Academic preparation for this work included a BS from Clemson University in 1960 in Industrial Engineering where he served as Speak of the Student Assembly and Captain and Most Valuable for the Clemson Swimming Team. After 3 years of experience in the US Air Force and 3 years in industry at JP Stevens, DuPont, and Olin, he attended Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, GA, where he graduated Cum Laude in 1969 with a Master of Divinity degree. Later, he received the Doctor of Ministry degree from McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago, IL.

A Memorial Worship Service of Celebration of Life will be December 17, 2018 at 1:00 pm. At Westminster Presbyterian Church after an earlier internment service for the family at the church Columbarium. Memorials may be given to the Westmister Church, 2310 Augusta Street, Greenville, SC 29605 or the charity of one's choice.

The family will greet friends in the atrium near the sanctuary after the service. The family is grateful to the caring staff and residents of Foothills Presbyterian Community who took care of Alan and supported the family for the last three years.
