Leslie Phyllis Clayton, originally from Hempstead, NY, passed away on the morning of June 25, 2020 at 68 years of age. She was residing at the NHC HealthCare – Maudlin nursing facility in Greenville, South Carolina when she passed.

She is preceded by her loving mother, Enid Loraine Clayton and George Vincent Clayton as well as her brother, Vincent Cory Clayton.

Leslie graduated from Hempstead High School, then, the University College of Buffalo with a Bachelor of Science degree in Art Education. She did post-graduate study at the Pratt Institute.

Leslie worked as an Art Teacher at Hempstead High School and as a substitute art teacher at various schools in the New York City School System. She taught her young students painting, drawing, jewelry design and photography. In 1974, she operated and managed her own pottery studio, The Ashford Hollow Foundation Studio, and her work was exhibited in Coticelli Gallery in the World Trade Center in New York City.

For a number of years, Leslie worked in Customer Service at JPS Textiles in New York. She relocated to Simpsonville, South Carolina and continued to work at JPS Textiles when the company moved there. Her parents retired shortly thereafter and moved to Simpsonville, South Carolina as well. After JPS Textiles closed, Leslie worked in Customer Service at Lowes, then retired from Lowes to take care of her elderly and ailing parents. When George passed away in 2010 and Enid passed in 2012, Leslie decided to stay in South Carolina. Over time, Leslie developed physical ailments that required her to move to a nursing facility. It is there that she passed away.

Leslie enjoyed sewing, crocheting, knitting, visiting art galleries and museums, and shopping. She leaves to cherish her memories and mourn her passing, a number of family members consisting of aunts, uncles, cousins, and two very dear friends, Sarah Christian and Minnie Martin from South Carolina, who treated and loved her like a sister.
Due to the spread of the COVID Virus Pandemic, the funeral service will be closed. After The Committal Service, as prescribed by the Book of Common Prayer, Leslie’s cremated remains will be placed in Niche E – 10 in the Memorial Garden of Holy Cross Episcopal Church, Simpsonville, South Carolina. She will be next to the Columbarium of her parents. The service will be recorded and sent to Family and Friends who will also be invited to participate in a Zoom, “Remembering Leslie”, online gathering, at a later date.
