Louis "Rusty" Russell Burress

August 5, 1947 — June 3, 2022

Louis Russell “Rusty” Burress, 74, of Alexandria, Virginia, passed away peacefully with his sister by his side at McCall Hospice Home in South Carolina on June 3, 2022.
A native of Greenville, South Carolina, he was the son of the late Louis M. Burress and the late Ann Long Burress.
Rusty is survived by his sister, Rebecca Burress Irwin; his nephew, Jay Louis Irwin; his nephew, Lawrence Russell Irwin; and his many cousins.
He graduated from Greenville High School in 1965. He held a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of South Carolina (1970) and a Master of Arts Degree in Probation and Parole Studies from Fordham University.
From 1976 to 1992, Rusty was a U.S. Probation Officer, serving the first nine years in the District of South Carolina and the last seven years on detail to the U.S. Sentencing Commission. He accepted a permanent position at the Commission in May 1992. He was the Principal Training Advisor of the U.S. Sentencing Commission in Washington D.C. from its inception in 1985 until his retirement in 2019. As the Commission’s principal trainer on the federal sentencing guideline, Rusty was beloved by thousands of judges, probation officers, and attorneys he trained across the United States.
Rusty was the pinnacle of what a good man is: kind, loving, giving, dependable, loyal, friendly, gracious, understanding, charming – and all of that underscored by a playful, wry sense of humor. He enriched the lives of all those who knew him.
At Rusty’s request, there will be no funeral service or memorial service. Instead, he said should there be those who informally gather to share fond memories, he would be honored.
