Richard "Rick" Horsfall

June 21, 1941 — August 9, 2020

Richard (Rick) H Horsfall, of Simpsonville, SC, passed away peacefully at home on August 9th, 2020 after battling an aggressive form of cancer for almost 2 years.
Born in Cleveland, OH on June 21st, 1941, to parents Richard T and Ursula Horsfall, the second of five children. Rick graduated from Brush High School, class of 1959. He attended Ohio Wesleyan University majoring in History and Economics. At OWU he was a FIJI, four-year member of the football team (and a lifelong Battling Bishop). Rick married his high school sweetheart Laurelyn Gron in 1963, and received his MBA from Ohio State in 1965. He began his business career at Cummins Engine Company of Columbus, IN. Rick and Laurie had two children, Rich and Cheryl. After a series of promotions and moves that took the family from Columbus to Chicago and Danbury, CT, Rick joined Thompson Equipment and moved the family to Huntington Beach, CA. After a blissful 4.5 years, it was on to Texas, Houston and then Duncanville. At this point Rick had joined Multi Arc/IonBond, where he would spend the remainder of his career continuing the moves to St. Paul, MN, then Flanders, NJ, and finally settling and retiring in Simpsonville, SC. Rick is survived by his wife of 57 years, Laurie, his son Rich and daughter Cheryl, brother Chris and sister Kathy, his daughter-in-law Amy, four grandchildren, Hannah, Hillary, Hope, and Luke and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.
Rick was a life-long learner, lover of history, a voracious reader, primarily non fiction. He really enjoyed biographies and autobiographies particularly those of Winston Churchill.
He was passionate about the Horsfall genealogy having inherited family documents from England dating back to the 1700’s. He enjoyed spending hours sifting through ledgers, making out details in written in flowery handwriting, uncovering clues about the rise and fall of the industrial woolen trade in Yorkshire and investigating a storied family mystery involving an Uncle who moved to Saskatchewan Canada to homestead and died under suspect circumstances. (This was the event that brought his Grandfather Harold to North America and our branch of the family tree to America.)
Rick was a runner, having started in the 1970’s in California. After surviving a triple bypass in 2003, he discovered the gym and broadened his work outs to include rowing, ellipticals, weights etc, working out 6 days a week.
Rick and Laurie are members of Trinity Lutheran Church and are grateful to Pastor Susan Crowell for years of support and her bedside ministry in Rick’s last hours. The family would also like to thank Open Arms / Bon Secours Hospice for their kind, empathetic staff and support.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Rick’s name to Ohio Wesleyan Fund, 61 Sandusky St., Delaware, OH 43015. Or Trinity Lutheran outreach program 421 N Main St, Greenville, SC 29601 or a charity of your choice. A memorial service may be held at a later date.
