Allan Douglas Long, 79, of Rockford, IL, made his final ascent from his home in Greer, SC to go to Jesus his Savior on April 28, 2024. He grew up in Columbus, IN and attended IU. He later completed a B.S. in Aviation Management from Pacific Western University. He was an outgoing and friendly guy who loved his family and friends, flying, boating, sports, and outdoor activities. Allan was a beloved husband to Ellen Long, a cherished father to Jason Long and Erin Janow, a caring stepfather to Jenny Hall, Chad Ohly, and loving grandfather to Alex and Sophia Long, Herschel Janow, Shelby Hall and Adriana and Zara Ohly. He is also survived by his brother, Larry Long. He was preceded in death by his father Kenneth Long, mother Margaret Long Wilkes, and brother Joel Long.
Allan served in the Air Force Reserves and flew high in his career as a professional pilot, becoming a jet captain at the young age of 25. He was a flight instructor and airline and corporate pilot for 35 years, working with various companies throughout his career - Forbes AFB, Air Midwest, Hesston, Cummins, Florida Express/Braniff Airlines, Honeywell, Ilitch Holdings including Little Caesars, Detroit Red Wings, and Detroit Tigers, and also General Dynamics.
He worshipped at First Presbyterian Church in Greenville, SC, and previously served as a deacon at Oconee Presbyterian Church.
Allan enjoyed golfing, flying, and boating - including living for 5 years aboard his 41’ Morgan sailboat, Free Flight.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Allan's memory can be made towards planting a tree at alivingtribute.org or elsewhere of your choosing.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, August 10, at 12 noon at Riverside Baptist Church, 1249 S Suber Rd, Greer, SC 29650.
