Barney Lee
Bailey
May 30, 1938 – May 1, 2026
Barney Lee Bailey, 87, of Greenville, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on May 1, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family and friends. He leaves behind a remarkable legacy defined by strength, discipline, adventure, and an enduring passion for life.
Born on May 30, 1938, in Oklahoma City, OK, Barney was raised with strong values that would guide him throughout his distinguished life. He graduated from Northwest Classen High School in 1956 before earning his degree from the University of Oklahoma in 1960. In 1961, Barney proudly began his service to his country as a line officer in the United States Navy. During more than five years of active duty, including service in the Vietnam War alongside the United States Marine Corps, he demonstrated the courage, dedication, and leadership that would remain hallmarks of his character. Following his military service, Barney built an accomplished 33-year career in the global engineering and construction industry. He contributed his expertise to major international projects through Bechtel and later Fluor Corporation, specializing in estimating, cost analysis, and project scheduling. 1975 brought him to Indonesia where Barney met his wife, Junie, and that began a beautiful relationship filled with laughter, countless experiences, and family devotion for 50 years. His work took him, Junie, and their two girls around the world, fulfilling his love for travel that spanned across 6 continents and cultural exploration. He retired from Fluor Corporation in 1999.
Barney will be remembered not only for his professional achievements but also for his vibrant spirit, captivating storytelling, dry humor, commitment to wellness, intense gym workouts that continued into his last year, and genuine encouragement of others. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, friend and patriot whose energy and wisdom touched all who knew him. He is survived by his beloved wife, Junie Bailey; sons Mathew Bailey of Oklahoma City, OK, and Spencer Bailey of St. Augustine, FL; daughters Shannon Bailey and Vanessa Godley of Greenville, SC; grandchildren Amanda Bailey and Cierra Bailey of Reno, NV; Rowan Warmuth and Drayton Warmuth of Greenville, SC; and great-granddaughter Amelia Bailey of Reno, NV. He was preceded in death by his eldest son Joe Bailey and son-in-law Allen Godley.
Barney’s immediate family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the many family members and friends for their outpouring of love and support; especially to Eric Walcher, sister-in- law Kelly Tan, Ross and Jill Mashburn, who offered constant loving support throughout his courageous battle with cancer. Special appreciation is also given to the compassionate staff of St. Francis Eastside and McCall Hospice House for providing exceptional care, comfort, and peace during his final days.
In accordance with Barney’s wishes (always a planner), a private celebration of life will be held at a future date off the Pacific coast, a place that held some of his most cherished memories.
