Barry Michael Bowling, a cherished son, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away on August 26, 2024, at St. Francis Hospital in Greenville, SC, the same city where he was born on November 21, 1955. Barry's life was a testament to the joy of simple pleasures, the value of dedication, and the warmth of a friendly spirit.
Born to Larry Bowling and the late Louise Bowling, Barry grew up in Greenville, where he quickly became known for his friendly demeanor, intelligence, and analytical mind. These traits not only won him the affection of those around him but also led him to serve as president of his high school class, a role in which he excelled and left a lasting impact.
After completing his education, Barry dedicated many years of service to the United States Postal Service, from which he retired, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and reliability. His commitment to his community extended beyond his professional life, as he was an accomplished zinnia gardener, a skilled handyman, and a devoted caregiver to his father, Larry Bowling. He also served as caregiver to the world’s laziest dog, Footsie, who demanded only the best cooked chicken at least three hours of petting and walking per day.
Barry's interests were as colorful and varied as the zinnias he so lovingly cultivated. He found solace and joy in spending time at the lake, where the tranquility of nature was a constant source of renewal.
A man of many hobbies, Barry was an avid fan of crosswords and sudoku, challenges that satisfied his love for puzzles and kept his mind sharp. He enjoyed the thrill of live music and sports, often attending concerts and ball games with his cousin Chuck. Barry's passion for baseball and football, particularly his support for Clemson, was well-known among his friends and family, and game days were always a special occasion.
In the kitchen, Barry was an adventurous cook, always eager to try new recipes and share his culinary creations with loved ones. His home was a welcoming place where the aroma of delicious food was a frequent invitation to gather and make memories.
Barry's reading list was as diverse as his interests, reflecting a mind that was always curious and eager to explore new worlds through the pages of a book.
He leaves behind a loving family: his father, Larry; his sister, Beth Roddy (Charles); his brother, Bentley Bowling; his nieces and nephews, Tamatha Roddy, Tyler Roddy, Trevor Roddy, and great-nephews, Brysyn and Braydyn Andrasik. Barry's mother, Louise, predeceased him, but the love and values she instilled in him remained a guiding force throughout his life. He was also predeceased by a niece, Tessa Andrasik.
Barry Michael Bowling will be remembered as a man who lived with kindness, thoughtfulness, and a gentle spirit. His legacy is one of love, laughter, and the countless lives he touched with his generosity and friendship. As we bid farewell to Barry, we celebrate a life well-lived, full of moments that will bloom forever in the gardens of our hearts, much like the vibrant zinnias he so loved.
Services will be held on Saturday, August 31, 2024, from 1-3 PM, at the Cremation Society of SC - Westville Funerals, 6010 White Horse Rd, Greenville, SC 29611.
