Basil Jean "BJ" McMurry, known BJ, passed away peacefully on June 18, 2024, in Greenville, South Carolina. Born on April 13, 1932, in Louin, Mississippi, Basil's long and fruitful journey through life has left a lasting impression on his loved ones and the community he so warmly embraced.

A proud graduate of Paris High School in 1950, BJ's thirst for knowledge led him to attend Wofford College, where he furthered his education and prepared for a future of excellence. His academic prowess was the foundation upon which he built a remarkable career.

BJ's professional life was marked by a steadfast dedication to Canal Insurance Company, where he started in August of 1956. His analytical mind and generous spirit quickly became apparent, and he rose through the ranks to become Vice President and Controller. After 41 years of service, he retired in December 1997, leaving behind a legacy of intelligence, integrity, and leadership.

BJ was a man of many interests. He had a passion for golf, relishing the game's blend of skill, strategy, and camaraderie. Boating was another passion, allowing him to explore and enjoy the serenity of floating up and down the ICW on his yacht and share joy and laughter with friends and family alike.

BJ's family was the cornerstone of his life. he was  predeceased by his wife Lucille G. McMurry  He was a devoted father to his sons, Mike A. McMurry, Mark A. McMurry, and Miles A. McMurry (Rebecca). 

His love and guidance extended to his grandchildren, Lauren O. McMurry, Madeline H. Hardison, Caleb M. McMurry, Ian N. McMurry, and Lydia B. McMurry. 
His great-granddaughter, Calliope J. McMurry, brought him immense joy in his the last year. BJ was a cherished brother to Joe E. McMurry. He was predeceased by his daughter, Laura O. McMurry, and sister, O. Lavern Belue, who both held special places in his heart.

Those who knew BJ will remember him as a man of exceptional intelligence. His analytical mind was complemented by a generous and loving heart, always thinking of others and extending help wherever it was needed. His presence was a source of stability and inspiration, and his influence will be felt for generations to come.

BJ's life story is one of dedication to his family, his work, and his passions. His legacy is a tapestry woven with the threads of love, hard work, and intellectual curiosity. Through his example, he taught us the value of commitment, the importance of family, and the joy of living life with a generous spirit.

As we bid farewell to BJ, we celebrate a life well-lived, a journey marked by accomplishments, love, and the profound impact he made on everyone he touched. His memory will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
