Betty B. Cady

January 25, 1927 — March 26, 2024

Greenville, SC

Betty B. Cady died on Tuesday, March 26th, 2024, at National Health Care in Mauldin, after a long battle with dementia, at the age of 97.

She was born in Trenton, Tennessee on January 25th, 1927, the daughter of Carrie and Murray Barker. She had two sisters, Jean, and Carolyn, both of whom preceded her in death, and many nieces and nephews.

Betty grew up in very humble means but had the fortitude, courage, and drive to succeed in anything she put her mind to. She attended public schools and was a salutatorian of her senior class.

In January of 1945, she enrolled in the nursing program at Methodist Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, and graduated top of her class. After becoming an RN, she married Charles T. Cady, a native of Memphis, and they headed to Nashville - he to Vanderbilt Law School and she as an RN at Vanderbilt Hospital. Finally, they landed in Chattanooga and for 36 years had a good and busy life and raised their two children. Betty worked as a head nurse at Moccasin Bend Hospital for children with mental illness. A very challenging job! But it was a job she loved!

Charles and Betty had two children Marsha Cady Shive (Jerry), and Charles T. Cady, Jr both from Greenville, South Carolina. Two grandchildren, Charles Andrew Shive, and Emily Shive Dean, and 7 great-grandchildren. To them, she was just "memo".

After retirement in 1996, they eventually moved to Greenville to be with their children and especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. After 71 years of marriage, her husband Charles, died in 2020.

Betty was a member of First Presbyterian Church downtown and was active in her Sunday school class, circle and her Wednesday bible study. She loved her church and rarely missed until she became ill.

The family would like to thank all her wonderful caregivers, especially Allison and Nita, for their loving care.

A small family service will be held at a future date in honor of Betty and Charles. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to First Presbyterian Church, 200 W. Washington St, Greenville, SC 29601, the Agape class.
