Betty Catherine Eason Vickers, formerly of Flagler Beach, Florida, departed this life on September 20, 2026, in Greenville, South Carolina, two weeks shy of her 100 th birthday.

Born October 4, 1926, in Ellenwood, Georgia, Betty was the youngest child of Marion Anderson Eason and Nanny Belle Adamson Eason. 

A member of the Greatest Generation and a woman ahead of her time, Betty covered a lot of ground during a century on this earth, residing in three U.S. states and traveling the world. She was fiercely independent, open-minded, sassy, stylish, generous, ever curious, and a lover of people who never met a stranger. She practiced her faith by loving her Lord with all her heart and her neighbor as herself. She figured if she focused on those two things, the rest would fall into place.

Betty married Thomas Howard Vickers in 1954, and in 1959, they welcomed their only child, Kathryn. Betty and Howard built lives, careers, and community in the Atlanta area until their retirements and subsequent move to Flagler Beach, Florida, in 1987. In 2021, Betty moved to Greenville, South Carolina, where she enjoyed living near her daughter and granddaughter and forming new friendships at The Gables Senior Living.

Betty had a near 30-year career with the Department of the Army, working in civilian service at the Atlanta General Depot (renamed Atlanta Army Depot, then Fort Gillem) in Forest Park, Georgia, from 1943 until 1972. She started in the key punch department and held a variety of jobs over three decades, working in the department where the first IBM computers were introduced. 

Betty is survived by her daughter, Kathryn Vass (Toni Masters) of Greenville, South Carolina; granddaughter, Lauren Vass Guthrie (Clay) of Cleveland, South Carolina; nieces, Lynda Clark (Dwaine) of Ormond Beach, Florida, and Bonnie Barnwell of Braselton, Georgia; nephews Doug Wren (Barbara) of Griffin, Georgia, and Randy Longino (Linda) of Fayetteville, Georgia; and several great-nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas Howard Vickers, of Flagler Beach, Florida; siblings, Roy Douglas Eason of Atlanta, Georgia, Hildreth Longino of McDonough, Georgia, and Gladys Wren Barr of Ormond Beach, Florida; niece Virginia G. Wren of Vinings, Georgia; and nephews, Tommy Aultman of Macon, Georgia, and Jerry Waddell of Covington, Georgia.

The family wishes to thank the caregivers from Providence Hospice in South Carolina for their love, kindness, and comfort over the past year. 

A celebration of Betty’s life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 7, 2026, in the chapel at Volusia Memorial Park, 550 N. Nova Road, Ormond Beach, Florida. She will be interred alongside her husband in the cemetery’s mausoleum.
