Brenda Joyce Gunnells Kolak

Brenda Joyce Gunnells Kolak, known to many simply as “Brenda”, passed away peacefully on September 25, 2026, in Greenville, South Carolina, at the age of 83.

Born on October 30, 1942, in Greenwood, South Carolina, Brenda lived a life defined by strength, devotion, resilience, and an unmistakable spirit. She was a woman of strong character who carried herself with determination and grace. She was independent, spirited, and never afraid to speak her mind. Her lively personality and unique way of seeing the world made an impression on everyone fortunate enough to know her.

Brenda worked as a waitress, a profession that suited her hardworking nature and her genuine ability to connect with people. She understood the importance of kindness, service, and treating others with dignity and respect. Over the years, she met countless people through her work and formed connections that extended far beyond the tables she served. Her personality was memorable, and those who crossed her path were unlikely to forget her.

Above all, family held a special place in Brenda’s heart. She took great pride in her children and in the lives they built, and her love for them was deep and enduring. She is survived by her daughters, Cherri McAlister (Danny), Granddaughters Kristie and Jessica, Great grandchildren 6; Valerie Douglas (Mark), Granddaughter Janessa, Great grandchildren 3; Crystal Gentry (Brent), Grandsons Chaz, Trent, and Dalton, Great grandchildren 4; and Ivey Perry (Cory), Granddaughters Ansley and Alliegrace. She is also survived by her sons, “Billy” William Kolak Jr. (Melissa), Grandchildren Cassie, Trey, Kristin, Kelly, and Riley, Great grandchildren 12; and “Jamie” James Kolak (Kimberly), Grandchildren Katie, Clay, Stephen, and Haley, Great grandchildren 7. She is preceded by her parents Ida Mae and James Thomas Gunnells. She is also preceded by her brother Luther Gunnells and nephew Butch Gunnells; survived by her niece Allison Packlick (Eddie).

Brenda found joy in the simple things that made life meaningful. She loved sitting on the porch, taking in the beauty of nature, and enjoyed reading and staying up to date on current events. She had a nurturing heart, especially when it came to animals, and lovingly cared for her beloved dog, Floof.

Those who knew Brenda will remember her for her strength, her determination, and her spirited personality. She was a woman who knew who she was and stood firmly in her beliefs. She could be outspoken and strong-willed, but those qualities were part of what made her uniquely Brenda. She brought energy wherever she went and left behind memories that will remain with those who knew and loved her.

Brenda Joyce Gunnells Kolak leaves behind a family who loved her deeply and a lifetime of memories shared with friends, loved ones, and all those whose lives she touched. Her life was a reflection of perseverance, individuality, devotion, and the enduring importance of family.
