Charles William Huffman

Mr. Charles William (Bill) Huffman was born on January 19, 1927, in Latrobe, PA, and passed away peacefully on March 17, 2024, in Greenville, SC. He was the son of the late Margaret S. and Charles W. Huffman of South Greensburg, PA.

Bill was a 1944 graduate of Greensburg High School and a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, Class of 1951. He was a World War II veteran serving in the U.S. Army from 1945 through 1946 and was stationed in Italy with the 88th Blue Devil Infantry Division.

Bill was a gifted teacher and elementary school principal in the Edgewood PA school system. He taught History and Social Studies for 15 years and was principal for 16 years. Even at 97 years old he remained in close contact with many of his former students and colleagues. He was a deacon and elder at the Edgewood Presbyterian Church and a longtime member of the Edgewood Club where he loved playing tennis and watching his children swim and grow up. He was a member of the Elks Club, the American Legion, and a fraternity brother with the Phi Gamma Delta and Kappa Kappa Gamma Fraternities.

Bill was preceded in death by his two wives: Shirley J. Huffman and Alberta G. Huffman, his brother Robert H. Huffman, and his granddaughter Amanda L. Byrne. Surviving Mr. Huffman, are his children and their spouses: David S. Huffman and his wife Vivian of North Canton OH; Gerri L. McAuliffe and husband Mike of Santa Fe, NM; Saundra K. Catanzano and husband Matt of Greer, SC; Ronald W. Huffman and wife M.J. Tooey of Ellicott City, MD; Stepdaughter Karen E. Scrimshaw and husband Ian of Tucson, AZ; and stepson Chris R. Mitall and wife Duduzile of Upper St. Clair, PA. Bill was also the proud grandfather of 16 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Bill was a warm-hearted, jovial, and witty man who delighted in telling stories of his many life experiences. He had a flair for remembering the smallest details and embellishing them just a bit. He would spend hours entertaining and delighting family and friends with his many stories.

As directed by Mr. Huffman, there will not be a formal funeral service. However, a memorial service to celebrate Bill’s life will be arranged at a later date.
