IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Charlotte Rae
Groves
February 13, 1936 – March 6, 2026
Charlotte was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1936, and passed away peacefully on March 6th, 2026, with her daughters, Jennifer and Susan at her side. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend to many, throughout her life. In 1953, Charlotte married John Groves, also of Baltimore just prior to John entering the US Air Force. The two moved to Biloxi, MS before moving to rural Tennessee where John finished his tour of duty. Throughout their 72 married years, the two resided in eight different states before finally retiring in Hartfield, Virginia in 1988, where they resided on Wilton Creek. Charlotte’s mother was born in Deltaville, and Charlotte has many family connections still in Middlesex County.
In addition to raising a family, Charlotte was very active in service to her community, wherever she lived. Through the years, she served as Girl Scout Troop Leader, church secretary and Sunday school leader, as well as local chapter president of the P.E.O. Sisterhood. In 1975, she assisted Vietnamese refugees as they fled from Saigon to gain asylum in the United States.
Charlotte loved both history and reading, which explains her tenure as tour guide at the Victory Center in Yorktown, and her service as the president of Friends of the Library supporting the local library in Deltaville. She volunteered at Hands Across Middlesex, and was an active member of Lower United Methodist Church, serving both as the LUMC Lay Leader and the chairperson of the church’s Council of Ministries.
Together, Charlotte and John joined Middlesex County Volunteer Rescue Squad (MCVRS), and attained the level of Shock-Trauma EMT. Later, Charlotte became the Public Relations, and Uniform Officer for the squad, and also served as President of the squad's Ladies Auxiliary. Charlotte and John then volunteered with a United Methodist Medical Mission group and traveled to Central America thereby providing medical care to underserved rural populations in Honduras.
Charlotte loved her life and her local community. She loved activities in and around the water, and other events throughout Middlesex County. She loved her pets, especially the dogs she cared for over the years, most of which were rescued. She dearly loved spending time with old friends, as much as making new ones. She and John loved the adventure of travel, seeing much of the US, and exploring over 32 different countries around the world. But most of all, Charlotte loved spending time visiting with her family, especially when family came to visit them on Wilton Creek.
Charlotte’s husband, John, passed away earlier this year in January, shortly after their 72nd wedding anniversary - New Year’s Eve, 12/31/25. They are survived by their three children: Susan, with husband Jon, in Alaska; John III (Drew), with wife Kris in New Hampshire; and Jennifer, with husband Chad in North Carolina. They also have five grandchildren: Jessica and husband Michel in Alaska, Jason and wife Leah in Washington, Taylor and husband Jeff in Rhode Island, Emma and husband Justin in Connecticut, and Lydia in Colorado. They are further blessed with nine great-grandchildren. Magnus, Maja and Linnea in Alaska; Liam and Graham in Rhode Island; Payton and Brooklyn in North Carolina, Braith in Connecticut, and Douglas, who is deceased.
A service will be held for both Charlotte and John at a later date.
