David M. Thomson, known affectionately as Dave, passed away on August 6, 2025, in Greer, South Carolina, at the age of 93. Born on November 12, 1931, in Oceanside, New York, Dave led a remarkable life characterized by intellect, creativity, and dedication to his pursuits.
A proud alumnus of Michigan State University, Dave earned his Bachelor’s degree while playing basketball for the Spartans and engaging with the Sigma Nu Fraternity. Following his undergraduate studies, he continued his academic journey, ultimately obtaining a Master’s in Mathematics from Ohio State University. His passion for education saw him serve as a graduate teaching assistant in Math and Physics.
Dave dedicated 22 years of his professional life to Columbia Gas in Columbus, Ohio, where he served as a Senior Research Engineer. During his time there, he pioneered several expert systems, which became foundational in the evolution of modern artificial intelligence. His innovative work in developing a process that resulted in a patent related to the regulation of natural gas flow exemplified his analytical nature and wise spirit. He was also a proud member of Mensa.
Beyond his professional achievements, Dave served in the United States Army in the 1950s, contributing to his country during a pivotal era. After military service, he continued to find fulfillment in various hobbies, particularly golf. As a member of the South Carolina USGA Slope team, he contributed significantly by rating golf courses throughout the state. His talent in programming allowed him to create a computer program designed to aid in the sloping of golf courses, which gained international recognition and usage in over 14 countries. Dave’s passion for golf led him close to qualifying for the Men’s US Senior Open, and he cherished each moment spent on the greens.
Dave's personality was characterized by intelligence, wisdom, and an analytical approach to challenges. His legacy is firmly rooted in the lives he touched through both his professional contributions and personal interactions.
He is survived by his loving family, including his son, Chris Thomson; daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Thomson; grandchildren, William and Michael Thomson; as well as step-children Larry Eichman, Terry Eichman, and Sherri Eichman. He joins his beloved wife, Jeanne Thomson, and brothers Tom and Jim Thomson in eternal rest.
David M. Thomson leaves behind a remarkable legacy, celebrated for his ingenuity, dedication, and the profound impact he made on the lives of those who knew him. He will be deeply missed by family and friends alike.
