Dorothy Mitchell Faress passed away peacefully at home on March 21, 2026, surrounded by her four children. She was 97. Dorothy (Dot) was predeceased by her husband of 52 years, Joseph James Faress; her parents Benjamin Harrison Mitchell and Annie Marie Garrison Mitchell; and her siblings, Elizabeth Mitchell Berry and William Charles Mitchell.
A lifelong Greenville resident, Dot graduated from Greenville High School where she realized her aptitude for sales and fashion and began her retail career at Ivey’s Department Store, then Meyers Arnold in Downtown Greenville. Years later, having married and raised her children, she then returned to work at Meyers Arnold, eventually retiring after 25 years when she became a beloved grandmother.
She will be remembered for her sweet, gentle nature. She had a keen sense of style and a beauty that did not diminish with age. She and Joe cherished family and designed and built their home as a gathering place where family and friends were always welcome and showered in love. In her later years, she spent Winter days by her fireplace listening and singing to anything from old Gospel hymns to Rock and Roll. Music brought her so much joy. Warm days were always spent on her patio with her plants and flowers. Nothing pleased her more than a “pretty day” under sunshine and blue skies – and a bowl of peach ice cream in her lap.
She is survived by her four children: James Michael Faress, II (Gloria) of Raleigh, NC; Suzanne Faress Hamilton (Hugh); Cynthia Faress; and Tracey Faress; and by her grandsons, Hugh Hamilton, III and Joseph James Faress, II.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 on April 16, 2026 at St. James Episcopal Church, 301 Piney Mountain Road, Greenville, SC 29609.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. James Episcopal Church, 301 Piney Mountain Road, Greenville, SC 29609 or Miracle Hill Ministries.
Special thanks to the dear Eucharistic Ministers of St. James Church who through their home visits kept Dot connected to her faith.
