Douglas Gregory Atherton

Douglas Gregory Atherton, known to most as Doug, passed away on September 5, 2026, in Landrum, South Carolina, at the age of 85. Born on June 16, 1941, in Brooklyn, New York, he lived a life marked by kindness, steady devotion, and a quiet warmth that touched all who knew him.

Doug was a loving, friendly, and gentle man whose presence brought comfort and ease to those around him. He carried himself with a calm spirit and a sincere interest in others, and he was admired for the gracious way he moved through life. Family, friends, colleagues, and acquaintances alike will remember him for his generous heart, his thoughtful nature, and the steady goodness that defined him.

He devoted much of his professional life to helping others as a Mental Health Therapist. In that role, Doug offered compassion, understanding, and support to those in need. He approached his work with patience and empathy, and he made a meaningful difference in the lives of many. His career reflected the same qualities that shaped his personal life, and he was respected for the dignity and care he brought to every interaction.

Doug also found great joy in his hobbies and interests. He was an accomplished amateur golfer with a 3 handicap, and he enjoyed the challenge, focus, and fellowship that the game provided. Golf was one of the many ways he appreciated the balance of discipline and enjoyment in life. He also had a deep and lasting passion for model trains, a pursuit that combined craftsmanship, imagination, and community. As a founding member of the Washington, DC, Maryland and Virginia Garden Railway Society and Club, he helped build an organization that reflected his enthusiasm and his desire to share that interest with others. Through this involvement, he formed lasting friendships and contributed to a hobby that brought him great satisfaction.

Doug’s greatest pride and deepest love were found in his family. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Janis Atherton, whose companionship and partnership were central to his life. He also leaves behind his stepson, Patrick David Gaul, Jr., and Patrick’s wife, Colleen Storrie Gaul; grandchildren Ashley Gaul and Patrick Gaul III. Also, one great grandchild Cedric. Doug valued the bonds of family and held those relationships close to his heart. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Cheryl Arbuckle and Liz Atherton, and his nephew, Chris Atherton. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Leland Atherton and Ronald Atherton, whom he remembered with love.

Those who knew Doug will remember the way he listened with care, spoke with kindness, and treated others with respect. He had a gentle manner that made people feel at ease, and his friendship was steady and sincere. He was the kind of man whose presence was a comfort and whose memory will remain a blessing to those who loved him. His life was a reflection of compassion, loyalty, and quiet strength, and he leaves behind a legacy of warmth and integrity.
