Dr. Donald Benson, a cherished father, grandfather, brother, uncle and esteemed educator passed away on September 2, 2025 in Central, SC at the age of 76. Born on October 31, 1948, in Clemson, SC, he was a man of exceptional intellect and kindness, whose legacy is etched in the hearts of those who knew him and in the many lives he touched throughout his life and distinguished career.
Dr. Benson was a graduate of Clearview High School, after which he pursued higher education with vigor and passion. He earned his undergraduate degree from Berea College in Kentucky, followed by a master's degree from Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond, KY. His academic journey culminated with a doctorate from the University of Georgia in Athens, GA, setting the stage for his influential role as a college professor in industrial engineering at SC State University.
Throughout his tenure as an educator, Dr. Benson was revered by colleagues and students alike for his dedication to teaching and his ability to inspire a generation of young minds. His work extended beyond the classroom as he was actively involved in various professional associations, contributing to the advancement of his field.
Dr. Benson's interests were as diverse as his talents. His lifelong pursuit of knowledge fueled his passion for reading and connecting with people from all walks of life. In college, he excelled in track and field and became a skilled swimmer. Intertwining sports into his daily life, he also enjoyed cycling, playing basketball, and tennis.
Music played a melodious thread throughout Dr. Benson's life, as he was a skilled trumpet player who cherished the harmonies and rhythms that music brought into the world. His love for animals showcased his compassionate spirit, and his presence was a comfort to all creatures great and small.
Dr. Benson is survived by his loving children (Kimberly M. Benson-Nelson, Shala Benson, and Dominique Benson) and grandchildren (Kyle M. Benson, Kiela A. Nelson, and Kameron A. Nelson, and Sanaa A. Benson) who will forever hold dear the lessons and love he imparted. He was predeceased by his parents, Garfield Benson Sr. and Lillie Mae Benson, and his siblings, Grace Benson Dorn, Lillie Marie Benson Randolph, Garfield Benson Jr., Carl L Benson, William S Benson, Alvin K Benson, and Judy F Benson. He leaves behind his sister, Phyllis T. Benson Boggs (Jonathan), brother, Frederick Benson, and sister-in-law Hazel Benson (wife of the late Garfield Benson, Jr.), and brother-in-law, William H. Randolph (husband of the late Lillie Marie Benson Randolph) along with a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Dr. Donald Benson's legacy reminds us to be lifelong learners, to cherish every connection with those we meet, and to have a passion for life. His memory will be cherished and his contributions, both to academia and to the lives of his family and friends, will continue to be felt for many years to come.
