With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Drenda Leigh (Burns) Hunter, who left this world on October 14, 2026, after facing complications from breast cancer with immense courage and grace. Born on March 6, 1963, in Caldwell, North Carolina, Drenda was the daughter of Naomi and Clarence Burns, both of whom preceded her in death, as did her husband, Randy Hunter.

Drenda radiated love and kindness. She will be remembered for her warm smile and unwavering positive outlook on life. Her journey was one marked by a deep dedication to her family, her faith, and her community. She is survived by her loving children, Matthew (Karen Hunter) and Madison Hunter, as well as her treasured grandchildren, Levi, Jordan, and Benjamin Hunter. Her sister, Tammy Leggins and her husband Clyde/Butch, also mourn this great loss, along with countless friends and former students whose lives she touched.

Drenda's academic journey led her to Lenoir Rhyne University, where she earned an MBA in Psychology. Her professional life was rich and fulfilling, beginning as a correctional behavioral specialist at the Western Youth Institution. She then found her true calling as a High School English and Special Education teacher, a role she embraced with passion and dedication. Even after her retirement, her love for education and her students drew her back to the classroom as a substitute teacher.

A woman of many talents and interests, Drenda coached cheerleading, a reflection of her lifelong passion for the sport. No matter where she lived, finding a church home was always a priority. From her childhood days at First Baptist Church of Rhodhiss to her most recent church family at SeaCoast in Greenville, SC, her involvement in each congregation was a cherished part of her life. She also found joy in life’s simple pleasures, such as spending time with her family, exploring consignment stores, indulging in reality TV shows, and enjoying peaceful days at the beach whenever she could.

Family and friends will gather for a memorial service to honor Drenda's life on October 20, 2026, at 11:00 AM at First Baptist Church of Rhodhiss, located at 200 Park Ave, Rhodhiss, NC 28667. As a tribute to her spirit and in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the family invites everyone to wear pink and/or black. Pink ribbon pins will be provided to commemorate her courageous battle.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society - Breast Cancer Fund, in memory of Drenda's enduring strength and to further the fight against the disease she faced so bravely.

Drenda's legacy of love, hope, and faith will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew her. Her life was a beautiful example of how kindness can touch so many.
