Edwin Patterson Burton, known affectionately as Ed to his friends and family, passed away on May 28, 2025, at the age of 74 in Greenville, SC. Born on January 2, 1951, in Abbeville, SC, Ed was a beacon of intelligence, generosity, and passion throughout his life.
Ed's journey began as the beloved son of the late Elizabeth Creswell Burton and Edwin Leo Burton. His early years in Abbeville laid the foundation for a life marked by dedication and service. Ed's academic pursuits led him to Anderson University, followed by Clemson University, and finally to Appalachian State University, where he earned a Master's degree and embarked on a distinguished career as a Clinical Psychologist.
For 30 years, Ed served with unwavering commitment in the Mental Health Department, touching countless lives with his expertise and compassionate care. His work was not just a job but a calling, and he was deeply involved in various associations, contributing to the advancement of mental health practices and support within the community.
Ed's life was rich with interests that spoke to his curious and adventurous spirit. He was an avid reader, ready to explore new worlds and ideas. Hiking was another passion, and he found solace and joy in the trails and natural beauty of the outdoors. These pursuits were not solitary; Ed's generous nature meant he often shared these experiences with others, fostering a love for learning and nature in those around him.
Ed's legacy is carried on by his devoted wife of 52 years, Peggy Burton, and their loving family. He was a cherished father to Andrea Ellison and Blake Burton, a respected father-in-law to Weston Ellison II and Bre Burton, and a doting grandfather to Sydney, Taylor, and Lily. His brothers, Johnnie Burton( Sylvia) of NC; Thomas Purdy(Judy) of NC, will remember Ed's warmth and wisdom. Ed's presence will be profoundly missed by all who knew him.
Ed's life was a testament to the power of kindness, the pursuit of knowledge, and the importance of family. Those who had the privilege of knowing him will remember a man who was not only intelligent and passionate but also deeply generous in every aspect of his life.
