Gerald (Jerry) Leland
Gohs
April 10, 1940 – April 29, 2026
Gerald Leland (Jerry) Gohs departed his earthly existence on April 29, 2026 surrounded by family and friends. Born April 10, 1940, in Detroit, Michigan to Leland and Gladys Gohs, Jerry as a year-and-a-half old survived a skull fracture and brain surgery, but eventually was started into pre-school, then skipping kindergarten and continuing normal primary schooling before attending Mackenzie High School in Detroit and the University of Detroit School of Architecture.
Before marrying Cheryl in June of 1966, Jerry was an architectural draftsman and specification writer for several Detroit area architectural firms (Smith Hinchman & Grylls, Pierce Wolf & Yee, and Tarapata McMahan & Paulsen). The couple would have three children before relocating to Columbia, SC in 1974 where he worked for the architectural firm of Lyles, Bissett, Carlisle, and Wolff (LBC&W) on projects in South Carolina and the Southeast. Jerry and Cheryl would welcome their fourth child in Columbia.
When professional work in Columbia dwindled in 1978, the family moved to Greenville, SC where Jerry worked for Daniel International (now Fluor Corp.) on several national and international projects. Elected Southeast Region Director for the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI), Jerry also received several CSI citations and specification awards. The family attended Mitchell Road Presbyterian Church and they were very active in the Agape Sunday School class and PrimeTime.
From the time he was 8 years old and for 20 years, Jerry had developed as a nationally ranked roller speed skater, three times National Champion and inducted into the USA Roller Sports Athletes Hall of Fame in Lincoln, Nebraska. Subsequent to roller speed skating, Jerry was also a marathon runner (21 different 26-mile marathons) as well as trainer for several first-time marathoners to raise funds through contributions for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Before and after retirement, Jerry and Cheryl often travelled the United States in their motorhome. When in Greenville, most of their spare time was spent family, at Senior Action among newly developed friendships, or with friends at Mitchell Road Presbyterian Church.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents and his older sister, Delores, his only sibling. Jerry is succeeded by Cheryl, his wife of 60 years, two sons Richard (Angie) and Terrence “Terry” (Michelle), two daughters Tracy and Angela, four granddaughters (Lauren Gohs, Kristen Gohs, Audrey Gohs and Emily Gohs) and three grandsons (Hunter Grembecki, Dylan Grembecki, and Chase Grembecki).
At Jerry’s request, no funeral service will be held.
