Gertrud E. "Trudi" Nicholson, a beacon of warmth and generosity, passed away peacefully in her home on December 13, 2025, at the age of 97. Born on October 18, 1928, to Karl and Adele Schögel in Germany, Trudi's journey led her to a life full of love, music, and family, culminating in her final moments surrounded by her loving family as she was welcomed into the arms of Jesus.Trudi's life was marked by her adventurous spirit. As a young girl she dreamed of coming to America, the land of opportunity with “cowboys and Cadillacs.” In 1950 she met her future husband, “Nick” or Bruce, a soldier at the Rhein-Main Air Force Base in Germany where she worked as a secretary. After four years, Trudi and Bruce were married, marking the fulfillment of Trudi’s long-held dream. With courage and hope, Trudi left her family behind to begin a new chapter in a different country. She was warmly welcomed by Bruce’s family, who embraced her as their own and made her feel at home from the very beginning.

She gained her United States citizenship in 1959 and was proud to be an American while retaining the rich cultural heritage of her German roots. She was a homemaker and worked briefly with Kemet Corp from where she retired in 1990. As a master baker and cook, Trudi’s kitchen was often filled with the sweet aromas of her delicious creations including many Germandelicacies. As a skilled seamstress, she effortlessly crafted clothes for her daughters, Monica and Heidi, during their childhood years. Her musical abilities shone brightly as she played the accordion and piano. Bruce and Monica provided accompaniment with guitars, filling their home with songs and melodies fondly remembered by all who had the pleasure of listening.

Described by those who knew her as always welcoming with a smile that would light up any room she entered. She was a thoughtful gift-giver, a loyal friend, the best mom, mama, Mutti and Omi ever, always finding the perfect way to show her love and appreciation.

Trudi possessed an adventurous spirit and was always eager to embark on journeys, especially when accompanied by friends to her beloved Helen, Georgia. Yet, no matter where her travels took her, Trudi’s heart always found its way back to her family. She held a unique place in their story as the last member of the Nicholson generation, a distinction that deepened the love and connection she shared with those closest to her.

She is now reunited with her late husband, Bruce, leaving behind a legacy of love and cherished memories with her daughters, Monica and Heidi (Steve Sipe), her granddaughters, Mandy and Elizabeth "little Victoria" (Jordan Patterson), and her great-grandsons, Titus, Israel “Izzy” and Axel. Her life was further enriched by a special niece, Myra, as well as other nieces, nephews including family in Germany and close friends, Mark and Cindy Lister, whom she regarded as part of her family.

In her passing, we celebrate a life well-lived, full of moments that touched the hearts of many. Her spirit, characterized by her unwavering kindness and adventurous soul, will continue to inspire and guide us. Trudi's legacy will live on in the stories shared, the traditions passed down, and the love that binds her family and friends together; a tapestry of memories that will be cherished by all who were fortunate enough to be a part of her remarkable journey. Her life was a testament to the beauty of giving, the joy of music, and the enduring strength of family.

Trudi will be deeply missed, yet her light will continue to shine in the hearts of those she touched.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Our family extends heartfelt gratitude to Interim Hospice Care and the dedicated nurses—Celinda, Sam, Nicole, Alyss, Stacey, and Teena—who offered compassionate and attentive support to Mom during her final months. Their unwavering kindness and professionalism brought comfort and peace to both Mom and our family in a time of need. We are deeply thankful for the care they provided, and we recognize that we could not have managed without their support. Our appreciation for their service will remain with us always.

"Every good gift and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights." (James 1:17) Trudi was the good and perfect gift to her family from the Father.

“Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints” (Psalm 116:15)
