James Michael Hammond, known affectionately as Michael to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on September 12, 2025, in his hometown of Greenville, South Carolina. Born on September 8, 1957, to the late James and Patsy Hammond, Michael's life was a testament to the enduring power of love, friendship, and passion.
Michael spent his childhood in Greenville, where he developed a deep love for the simple pleasures in life. He was a devoted fan of NASCAR, cheering on his favorite driver, Jeff Gordon, with an enthusiasm that was infectious to all who knew him. His love for music was broad and deep, resonating through the melodies he would often hum or share with others. A voracious reader, Michael found solace and adventure within the pages of books, which were his constant companions.
Those who knew Michael would describe him as a loving and friendly soul, always ready with a warm smile or a kind word. His passion for life was evident in everything he did, and it drew people to him. Michael's presence was a source of comfort and joy to his family and friends, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Michael is survived by his brothers, Dale Hammond and his wife, Kim, and Terry Hammond and his wife, Evelyn. Each family member carries forward the legacy of Michael's loving spirit and friendly demeanor. Though he was preceded in death by his parents, the values they instilled in him lived on through his actions and the way he treated those around him.
We will miss his friendly face, his loving heart, and his passionate spirit, but we are grateful for the time we had with him and the memories we shared. Rest in peace, Michael; your race is run, your song is sung, and your story is told, but your legacy will continue on.
