Jim began his professional journey serving in the Army during the Vietnam war, a testament to his commitment and discipline. After his service, he ventured into the shoe repair business, owning The Country Cobbler and retail leather businesses in Claremont, NH. His entrepreneurial spirit soon led him into the field of real estate beginning in 1973 and continuing throughout the years holding licenses in California, Florida, New Hampshire and Maine, where he notably purchased and redeveloped the Shawmut Inn in Kennebunkport. Later in life, Jim made a significant move to California, where he obtained a contractor’s license focusing on redevelopment and refurbishment of manufactured homes within the Riverside and Imperial Counties. This led to owning two mobile home parks and refurbishing over 350 homes throughout his career. Transforming homes and communities was not merely a job for Jim; it was a calling that brought him genuine joy.
Known for his loving, kind, and gentle nature, Jim was a man whose generosity touched all who knew him. His selfless spirit was evident in his eagerness to lend a hand wherever needed. A true people person, Jim had a warmth and friendliness that made everyone feel welcome and appreciated. He loved jazz and karaoke, often bringing smiles and laughter through his participation in these joys. Meeting new people energized him. He made connections that lasted a lifetime.
Jim is remembered by his devoted wife, Judy Waterman; his daughter from his first marriage, Bonnie Waterman; and his step-daughter, Carrie Maiara, along with her husband, Amir Maiara. He also leaves behind cherished family members including his sister, Norma Phagan; nieces Sherri Hurd, Kathy Talbot, and Tammy Froehlich; as well as his nephew, Steve Phagan. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren, Steve Waterman, Ashley Waterman, Andrew Waterman, Kaden Maiara, Ariana Maiara and great-grandchildren, Jordan Saylor, Justina Waterman, Aleah Waterman and Liam Graham. Their lives have been deeply enriched by Jim’s presence, his stories, and his enduring kindness.
He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Beatrice Lillian Page and Ray Wesley Waterman, and his brother, Ray Wesley Waterman Jr. The legacy Jim leaves is one of heartfelt generosity, steadfast dedication, and a profound love for both people and places he called home.
James "Jim" David Waterman will be remembered for his vibrant spirit, his capacity for kindness, and a life dedicated to building and renewing not only homes but friendships and community. His gentle humor and warm smile will remain in the hearts of all who were privileged to know him.
