Joe “Earl” Sweet, 79, beloved husband of Linda Dover Sweet, passed away peacefully on June 5th, 2024. He leaves behind a rich family legacy and countless cherished memories filled with stories, laughter, and moments shared with family and friends. Born in Greenville, SC, in 1945, Earl was the son of the late Furman Earl Sweet and Edna Addison Sweet. He graduated from Parker High School in 1962.

Earl was a skilled electrician who excelled in various roles throughout his career. However, the titles he cherished most were Dad and Papa. Earl always prioritized his daughters and grandchildren, ensuring they always had a Little Debbie cake within reach. He could often be found near the water—whether at the beach, lake, or pool—enjoying life with his friends and family. Earl was also a devoted fan of the Clemson Tigers and rarely missed a Nascar race, cheering passionately for his favorite teams.

In addition to Linda, his loving wife of 61 years, Earl is survived by his two beloved daughters, Sharon LeRoy (James) of Columbia, SC, and Karen Shepard Howes of Liberty, SC. He is also survived by his nine grandchildren: Christy Powell (Eric), Joseph Ware, Crista Massie (Jeff), Jeffrey Shepard (Sherri), Josh Shepard, Brandi LeRoy, Kelsi LeRoy, Brittany Shepard, and Jamie LeRoy. Earl's legacy extends to 23 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who supported Earl during his courageous battle over the past few years, with special thanks to Mike Whitmore for all of your help, Christy Coggins for your dedication and help, and to the nurses who provided exceptional care.

In addition to his parents, Earl was predeceased by his brother Ken Sweet and his lifelong best friend, Bo Eller. Earl and Bo's playful antics and enduring friendship were well-known, and their reunion in Heaven is sure to be filled with more mischievous adventures.

A celebration of Earl’s life will be held at the Cremation Society of Greenville, on Friday, June 14th at 11am. The family invites all who knew Earl to join in commemorating his life and legacy.
