Greenville, SC

Joel R. Irvine, 79, of Greenville, SC, passed away on March 21, 2025. Born March 8, 1946, in Hartford, CT, Joel lived a life defined by dedication, innovation, and love for his family and friends.

He was the son of the late Lawrence and Virginia Mascolo Irvine. He is survived by his wife, Eva Rosalie Irvine, and his son, Joel Reynolds Irvine II. He also leaves behind his brothers: Lawrence Lee Irvine and his wife Karen, Robert Henry Irvine, and Raymond Scott Irvine and his wife Lisa. Joel is also fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews, who will carry with them memories of his humor, generosity, and compassion.

Joel’s early athleticism was exceptional. He was an outstanding swimmer at Hartford Public High School, winning awards at both statewide and New England competitions. At Coventry High School, he excelled in track, setting multiple school records. His competitive drive and love for physical challenges carried into adulthood through his passion for golf, swimming, and time spent on the water.

Professionally, Joel was a respected civil engineer and architectural builder, known for his expertise in concrete. He worked and contributed on major projects, including the Twin Towers in New York and the Crown Building in Charlotte, NC. He was Vice President and an active committee member of the American Concrete Institute for the Carolinas, as well as Chairman and President of the Expanded Shale Clay and Slate Institute.

Joel’s research in concrete directly contributed to changes in national building codes. He collaborated with Lehigh University and the University of Kentucky on concrete testing and development, helping to advance standards for fire prevention in construction. Joel served as President of the Bullitt County Chamber of Commerce in Kentucky where his distinguished contributions to both industry and community earned him the honorary title of Kentucky Colonel.

Joel was honorably discharged from the Connecticut Army National Guard after four years of service. He also won numerous awards competing in concourse events, proudly presenting his two self-restored series II XKE Jaguar automobiles.

Those who knew Joel will remember him as the life of the party, quick with a joke, generous with his time, and always ready to lend a hand. He brought people together and left a lasting impression through both his work and his character.

Joel Irvine leaves behind a lasting legacy of leadership and integrity. His memory lives on in those who knew him—through the stories that will continue to be shared, the ones that make us laugh, and the ones that leave us wishing there were more chapters to come. He is, and will always be, deeply missed.
