Our hearts are heavy as we say goodbye to John Hicks, who passed away peacefully on July 5, 2025, held close by those who cherished him most.

He was born on September 6, 1947, to Margaret Parris and Jack Hicks and grew up as their only child in Greenville, South Carolina. John attended Greenville Senior High School and went on to graduate with the University of South Carolina’s Class of 1969, forming lifelong friendships and building the foundation for a life of purpose and service.

A proud United States Marine Corps veteran, John served with courage and honor during the Vietnam War. His strength, sacrifice, and deep sense of duty were a lasting source of pride and a testament to his character.

John built a respected career as a stockbroker, guiding his clients with wisdom, integrity, and genuine care. Yet his truest joy came from the simple pleasures of life—riding horses across the beautiful countryside, spending peaceful hours in nature, and sharing these experiences with those he loved most.

A lifelong equestrian, John found purpose and joy on horseback, exploring the fields and forests of the Carolinas. As a dedicated member of the Greenville County Hounds and Tryon Hounds, he embraced the bonds of tradition, camaraderie, and respect for the land. These experiences were not just pastimes but a reflection of his adventurous spirit and love of the outdoors.

Above all, John was a loving husband to Julie and a devoted father to Morgan, Parris, and Jordan. He cherished every moment with his family and took great joy in sharing his love of horses and the outdoors. His greatest happiness was found in their company, especially spending time with his grandchildren, Savannah, Jackson, Maggie, and Mackenzie, who brought him endless pride and delight. His legacy lives on in their hearts and in the memories they created together.

John will be remembered always for his kind heart and the warmth he brought to every room. His steady presence, generous spirit, and unmistakable sense of humor made him a joy to be around and a true friend to so many. Those who knew him will forever cherish his laughter, his stories, and the countless ways he made life richer just by being himself. He will be deeply missed, forever loved, and always remembered by all whose lives he touched.

At John’s request, a private memorial for the immediate family will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to the non-profit, Loaves and Fishes of Greenville.
