Judith Ann McDermott, affectionately known as Judy to her friends and family, passed away peacefully on May 16, 2025, in Greenville, SC, at the age of 84. Born on January 15, 1941, in Dodge City, KS, Judy's life was marked by her spirited nature, warm friendliness, and thoughtful approach to the many lives she touched.
Judy's journey led her from the heart of Kansas to the vibrant community of Greenville, SC, in 1964. She brought her Midwestern charm and tireless work ethic with her, making a significant imprint on Greenville's culinary and community landscapes. Alongside her beloved husband, Mark McDermott, who preceded her in death, she co-owned and operated the local favorite Taco Cantina on Augusta Rd. She also played a pivotal role in the success of Mr. Grattis Pizza Parlor on Faris Rd. Her passion for community service extended beyond her professional life as she dedicated herself to various local causes and organizations.
A graduate of high school, Judy's educational background laid a foundation for her role as an administrator in Topeka, KS, before she took on the entrepreneurial world with Mark. Her leadership skills and business savvy translated into the couple's success and the creation of a legacy that would long outlive them both.
Judy's zest for life was evident in her many interests and hobbies. She was an avid home decorator, whose creative flair was apparent in every room she embellished. Her artistic side also found expression through painting, a pastime that allowed her to capture the beauty she saw in the world. Judy's love for animals was unparalleled; she could often be found rescuing and caring for those in need, embodying the compassion she carried in her heart.
Her commitment to the community was unwavering. As a Girl Scout Leader, Judy guided young girls to be confident, self-reliant individuals. Her active involvement in the PTA throughout the 1970s demonstrated her dedication to education and the well-being of children in her community. Judy's legacy as a community volunteer remains a testament to her belief in giving back and making a difference.
Judy is survived by a family that adores and cherishes her memory, including her daughter Kelly Mueller, grandsons Garrett Mueller, Duncan McDermott, and Riley McDermott, granddaughter Gracen Mueller, son Jeffrey McDermott, and her siblings Susan Everett (Kenneth), and Joyce Graumann, she was predeceased by her sister Nancy Fortner, along with her brothers Fred and Murray McKay. Each family member reflects a facet of Judy's vibrant spirit and caring nature.
Judy's life was a tapestry of love, hard work, and community service. Those who knew her will remember her as the epitome of thoughtfulness, friendliness, and spirit. Her laughter, wise counsel, and the warmth of her presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Judy's life story is one that will continue to inspire and influence the many people she encountered. Her legacy of kindness, dedication, and love will endure through the lives of her family, friends, and the community she so passionately served.
