Linda Gail Porter-Miller went gently and peacefully to her rewards Good Friday, March 29, 2024. She leaves behind her adoring husband, Don, her step-daughter Ashley Childress (Justin), grandchildren Miller Kate and Nolan. She leaves her brother William (Bill) Porter (Brenda Joy), niece Anja Johnston (Barry), grandnieces Jessica Johnston and Danelle Walker (Sean), grandnephew Mason, nephew William (Little Bill) Porter, and grandnephews Blake and Cole.
Linda also leaves behind her adopted family Carolus Ann Bennett, her sons James and Carolas, and daughter Relisha along with a slew of adopted aunts, uncles, and grandbabies. She leaves behind Tab Long, and sisters by a different mother, Lynn Bruce and Louise Gillespie.
Linda was predeceased by her parents, Ralph and Netia Porter. She is survived by her step-mother Francis Brazille Porter.
Growing up in the West End of Greenville, Linda was a proud graduate of Parker High School, Class of 1969, and Furman University, Class of 1973. Linda also held master’s degrees from the University of South Carolina and Clemson University.
Linda was called to teach and spent her entire career serving the children of Greenville County, primarily teaching elementary Physical Education at Taylors Elementary School and coaching both basketball and tennis at Riverside High School. She was named Region Coach of the Year many times, was a WYFF Golden Apple Award winner, and was named State Physical Education Teacher of the Year in 1997.
“Miss PE” or “Coach P” loved her former “babies” and found great joy when she ran into them in the years since their graduation and her retirement.
She loved the outdoors, “piddling” in her yard or hiking with her husband and “puppy dogs”, the latest being Quigley and Cora, adopted Blue Heeler Cattle Dogs.
A small woman, she cast a huge shadow over the people she came into contact with. We are all better for having known her.
A celebration of life will be held at City View Baptist Church on April 16, at 500. Her family will receive friends at 4:00.
Don would like to thank all of the family, friends, former teaching peers, former students, and former players who reached out to both Linda and Don.
It is requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the following
