Linda Dover
Sweet
November 21, 1945 – April 28, 2026
McKissick Center
Starts at 4:30 pm (Eastern time)
Linda Dover Sweet, 80, beloved wife, mother, and nana, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 28th, surrounded by her family. She leaves behind a legacy rooted in love, strength, and deep devotion to those closest to her. As one grandchild perfectly described her, she was a “feisty yet loving Nana,” and there truly are no better words to describe this short queen!
Born in Greenville, South Carolina, in 1945, Linda was the daughter of the late Robert Horace Dover and Lessie Bell Dover. She graduated from Wade Hampton High School in 1962.
Linda lived a life centered around family. She was the heart of her home, always making sure everyone was cared for and had what they needed. Her presence brought comfort, her words offered guidance, and her love was something her family could always count on. As one of her grandchildren wisely said, she was always the person her family could go “home” to. Whether it was time spent gathered around the pool or ocean, celebrating birthdays and holidays, camping at the lake, or simply being together, Linda made every moment meaningful and loved her children and grandchildren unconditionally.
She could often be found hunting for a good yard sale find or cooking up something special in the kitchen for those she loved (unless Jin Jin sounded like a better idea, which it often did).
Outside of her work, Linda was an avid lifelong learner. After a successful career, she chose to return to technical school, continuing to grow and challenge herself in new ways. Long before most people had one, Linda was the proud owner of a color printer, and she spent many late nights helping her grandchildren print school projects at the last minute. She essentially ran the family print shop, and her grandchildren are still grateful for the extended hours.
Linda was the widow of Joe “Earl” Sweet, her devoted husband of 61 years. Together, they built a life full of memories, laughter, and unwavering support for one another. Their bond was something admired by all who knew them.
She is survived by her two daughters, Sharon LeRoy (James) of Columbia, SC, and Karen Shepard Howes of Liberty, SC; her brother, Robbie Dover; and her sister, Greta Fortenberry (Herman). She also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren: Christy Powell (Eric), Joseph Ware (Makayla), Crista Massie (Jeff), Jeffrey Shepard (Sherri), Josh Shepard, Brandi LeRoy (John), Kelsi Holmes (Calob), Brittany Shepard (Lex), and Jamie LeRoy. Linda’s legacy continues through her 25 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren, all of whom she loved dearly.
The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to those who cared for Linda in her final days, as well as the friends and loved ones who offered support, prayers, and kindness throughout this time.
In addition to her husband, Linda was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Sarah Dover Burdette; brother-in-law, Steve Burdette; and her sister-in-law, Debbie Dover.
A celebration of Linda’s life will be held on Friday, May 1st at 4:30 PM at the McKissick Center in Liberty, South Carolina. All who knew and loved her are invited to join in honoring a life so well lived.
Cremation Society of South Carolina Westville Funerals is honored to serve the family of Linda Sweet.
