Mark Scheyder, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on July 17, 2025, in Piedmont, South Carolina. Born on November 30, 1959, in Groton, Connecticut, Mark's steadfast spirit made a lasting impression on all who knew him.
Mark's journey began as the beloved son of Ernest John Scheyder and Maryanne Scheyder. He is survived by his mother, Maryanne, as well as his siblings, Ernest Scheyder II, Kristen Scheyder-Rabinowitz, and Susan Scheyder. Mark's life was enriched by the love of his devoted wife, Shelly, and their three children, Megan Eno, Riley Scheyder, and Chloe Rueda, who, along with their respective spouses Dan, Ashley, and Cruz, brought joy and purpose to his days. His role as "Poppy" to his adored grandchildren, Emmett, Avery, Ethan, and Annabelle, was one he cherished with every fiber of his being.
Mark's academic achievements were a testament to his dedication and intellect. He became a proud Merchant Seaman through the Maine Maritime Academy ‘82 and earned a Master's in Business from California Lutheran University. His career as a Merchant Seaman was filled with many contributions to significant maritime projects, as either Ship Captain or First Mate, including seafloor mapping, oil spill recovery, and recovery efforts for the Space Shuttle Challenger.
Mark's commitment to serving others led him to join his church staff, where he worked for 16 years. He enjoyed running sound for the band, going on mission trips to Haiti, and many considered him an anchor to the church community that he loved.
The sea was Mark's sanctuary, a place where he felt most at peace. His love for grilling brought moments of joy and togetherness. He especially loved making the holiday turkey on his charcoal grill each year. Mark was a loyal Boston Red Sox and Patriots fan, he was known for his Red Sox hat which he always wore. He loved his children and was always supporting them as a proud parent or coach. A true rock for the family, he was a constant source of wisdom, strength, and peace for his children and for anyone who needed a father figure. His grandchildren, who lovingly refer to him as "Poppy," will always be reminded of the amazing man that he was.
Mark Scheyder was the embodiment of love, passion, and selflessness. He was known for his intentionality, honesty, and kind-hearted nature. His legacy is not only in the lives he touched but also in the way he lived his life, with an open heart and a helping hand. His peaceful demeanor endured even after his diagnosis of ALS in the Fall of 2024; Mark lived with intentionality in all circumstances. He will be profoundly missed, yet his spirit will continue to guide and inspire those fortunate enough to have been part of his remarkable journey. Mark's memory will forever be a beacon of light for his family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
In lieu of flowers, or memorial trees the family is asking that people share stories of Mark to celebrate him and help preserve a living history of his impact on people. We believe Mark was a servant of many and chose to live his life out not seeking recognition, sharing these memories would help love our family well in this time and in future hard moments.
