Mary Elaine (Laine) Stokes, of Greenville, South Carolina, passed away on November 21, 2025. Born at Doctors Hospital in Freeport, NY. Laine was one of five children of Philip and Fay Romeo. She spent much of her early life in South Florida, a 1975 graduate of Pompano Beach High School. Laine eventually relocated to the Upstate in the mid 1990’s, making the Greenville area her final home. A area she truly loved, especially downtown Greenville.

Laine dedicated many years to her career as a paralegal at Nexsen Pruet Law Firm, Bi-Lo Grocery, Hughes Development and Greenville County. She was known for her strong work ethic, sharp mind, and wonderful sense of humor. She loved yoga, swimming, diving, reading, and cooking for family and friends. Laine had a lifelong love of God, country, family and dogs, especially Rescued English Setters.

She is survived by her husband, Tim Stokes; sons, Calvin Hunt, Devon Hunt, daughter Taylor Crabb, son-in-law Nate Crabb and three grandchildren Roman Crabb, Eli Crabb and Sawyer Crabb, sister Diane Romeo. She was preceded in death by parents Philip and Fay Romeo and brothers, Philip Romeo jr., Gary Romeo and Dan Romeo.

A memorial service will be held in April in Greenville SC. The date, location and time are yet to be determined. A posted announcement will be made in the future.

Laine requested, in lieu of flowers, any donations should be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
