Michael A. Broder, 79, of Greenville, SC, passed away peacefully on January 18, 2026. Born July 24, 1946, Michael lived a life marked by humor, curiosity, creativity, and dedication to his family.

Michael earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from the University of Michigan, an education that not only shaped his professional career but also sparked a lifelong devotion to Michigan sports. He spent 35 years as an engineer with General Electric, where he made several lasting contributions to his field. Committed to lifelong learning, Michael later earned an MBA from Union College.

Above all, Michael was a devoted family man. He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Jill Broder, and his daughters, Sharon (Curtis) Hanel and Lara Fetzer. He took great pride in his role as a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, and leaves behind three grandchildren, Sydney Gilliam (Timmy), Jack Hanel (Libby), and Madison Hummel (Tyler) and two great-grandchildren, Collins Gilliam and Dylan Hummel, who will continue his legacy. He is also survived by his sister, Vicki Elsberg, niece, Lenore Asbel (Stephen), and nephew, Nathan Elsberg.

Michael’s interests were as diverse as they were enriching. He found joy in painting, particularly pen-and-ink drawing, and expanded his knowledge through coursework at Furman University. A passionate historian, he especially enjoyed teaching in Furman’s Olli program where he enthusiastically shared his vast knowledge of the War of 1812 with others.

Music was a constant source of enjoyment in Michael’s life. He loved attending concerts and had a special appreciation for rock and jazz. A talented home cook and grill master, Michael brought family and friends together around the table to share in his talents while making lasting memories. He also had a deep interest in genealogy and family history, as well as a love for travel that fed his adventurous spirit.

Michael was known for his infectious laugh, warm sense of humor, and his unmistakable hat collection, always ready with the perfect hat for any occasion.

Michael A. Broder leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, creativity, and intellectual curiosity. He touched many lives and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
