Nyoka Margaret Swanson, a beacon of warmth and love, passed away peacefully on January 1, 2026, in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Born on June 4, 1943, in Murphy, North Carolina, Nyoka exemplified a life rich with purpose, dedication, and spirituality.

Throughout her career, Nyoka showcased her exceptional talents in various fields, leaving an indelible mark on many. Whether working as a talented cosmetologist, an inspector at Milliken, or during her time at Mayfield Mills, she approached every task with a friendly spirit and intelligent insight. Nyoka was not only selfless in her endeavors but also inspired those around her through her unwavering faith and spirited disposition.

Nyoka's passions extended beyond her career. She found joy in sewing and gardening, often dedicating time to create beautiful pieces and nurture the earth around her. These hobbies were not just pastimes; they were expressions of love and creativity that touched the lives of those who experienced her handiwork and lush gardens.

Her legacy lives on in her beloved family. Nyoka is survived by her cherished children: Glaydeane S. Lee, Harvey L. Swanson (Debbie), and Paul W. Swanson, who will forever carry her memory in their hearts. She was a devoted grandmother to her grandchildren: Kristen N. Swanson (Brian), Elizabeth Swanson Harty (Jack), Madison Sims, and Baylie McSherry and great grandchildren, Austin Hames, Jacob Harty, Brooklyn Swanson, Kinzie Harty, Owen Harty, and William Swanson.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Mae Nix Clary, her grandparents, Grady H. and Maude R. Nix, who raised her as their own and her loving husband of 66 years, Verlin Swanson. These family ties shaped her into the remarkable woman she became, and their spirits will forever be intertwined with hers.

In her journey, Nyoka Margaret Swanson filled the lives of many with compassion, laughter, and inspiration. Though she may no longer walk among us, her legacy of kindness and love endures through her family and all those fortunate enough to have known her. As we celebrate her life, we remember a remarkable woman whose light will continue to shine brightly in our hearts.

Honoring her wishes, the family will be having a private ceremony at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly request that the memorial donations be made to Spartanburg Regional Hospice, 686 Jeff Davis Dr. Spartanburg, SC 29303. In honor of Jennifer Rodger, the loving, caring and devoted nurse who took care of her and her husband.
