IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Phillip J
Smith, Jr.
January 25, 1951 – January 15, 2026
Phillip J. Smith, Jr., a cherished pillar of the Greenville and Clemson community, passed away peacefully on January 15, 2026, at the age of 74, in the same town where he was born on January 25, 1951. Known affectionately as Pete, he lived a life marked by devotion to his family, a passion for craftsmanship, and a legacy of kindness that touched all who knew him.
Pete's journey began in Greenville, South Carolina, where he was born into a world that would be shaped by his loving presence. He shared a life of joy and companionship with his beloved wife, Beth A. Smith, and together they raised a family that became his pride and joy. His children, Ben Smith and Hannah Jacobson, along with Mary Stuart & Shane Turner, carried forward his values and love for family. Pete's sisters, Jan & Dennis Smith, and Julie & John Stephens, will remember their brother with fondness for his humor and warmth. He was a brother in marriage to Steve, Eddie, Larry, and Vicki, and many cousins. He was a doting grandfather to Will, Mary Kate, and Luke Turner, and a proud grandfather to Taylor Wesbury, Jordan, Josh, and Patrick Smith. Pete bore the loss of his sons, Kirk and Ryan Smith, with a strength and grace that inspired those around him.
Pete's professional life was as a respected business owner of Clemson Rent-All, where he combined his entrepreneurial spirit with a commitment to service. His work extended beyond the day-to-day operations, as he was actively involved in various associations, contributing to the growth and betterment of the industry he loved.
Beyond his business acumen, Pete was a master carpenter, an avid fisherman, and a skilled woodworker. His hands, always creating, built not just furniture but also a tangible legacy of his talent and passion. Pottery was another of his interests, and his pieces were as much a testament to his patience as they were to his artistic eye. But above all, Pete was a family man, and his greatest joy was found in the time spent with his loved ones.
Those who knew Pete will remember him as loving, kind, and funny—a man whose laughter was infectious and whose heart was generous. He had a knack for making everyone around him feel special, and his absence will leave a void in the many lives he touched.
Pete's life was a tapestry of meaningful relationships, enduring friendships, and heartfelt moments. As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, we celebrate the legacy of love and laughter he leaves behind. Phillip J. Smith, Jr.'s story is one of a life well-lived and well-loved, and he will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
