Ray Otto Wilson, Jr., known lovingly to family and friends as Buddy, passed away on September 12, 2026, in Greenville, South Carolina, at the age of 82.

Born on April 19, 1944, in Greenville, South Carolina, Buddy lived a life marked by service, loyalty, and a deep devotion to the people around him. He was the son of the late Ray and Peggy Wilson and carried the values of hard work, kindness, and responsibility throughout his life. Those who knew him best will remember him as a funny, courageous, and wise man, with a presence that could brighten a room and steady those who needed encouragement.

Buddy is survived by his loving wife of 23 years, Belinda Speaks Wilson; his daughters, Wendy Wilson, Laura & (Ronald) Reese, and Alexia Speaks; his sisters, Cathy (Wayne) Whisnant, and Cindy Wilson; his granddaughters, Yazmin Wilson and Chosen Speaks, and Heather (Casey) Livengood; his nieces, Ashley & (Bobby) Mullikin, Heather & (Casey) Livengood, and nephew Hunter (McKenzie) Wyatt; and many great-nieces and nephews. They will cherish his memory. He is also remembered by his two closest friends: Joe Capri and Mike Willimon. 

Buddy dedicated much of his life to helping others and serving his community. He retired as a Captain with the Greenville City Fire Department, where he earned the respect of his fellow firefighters through his leadership, commitment, and calm strength in times of need. His career reflected the very best of who he was, and he took great pride in being someone others could depend on. In addition to his service with the fire department, he was a longtime employee of Mike Willimons Towing and Recovery and Lakeview Golf Course, where he formed lasting friendships and was valued for his dependable work ethic and easygoing nature.

He was a master at helping others in need, and that gift was evident in every part of his life. Buddy had a generous spirit and an instinct to step in when someone needed a hand. Whether through his work, his friendships, or his family life, he was always ready to offer support, guidance, or a well-timed laugh. He was also known as a political influencer, someone who cared deeply about the world around him and was never afraid to share his thoughts with conviction and clarity.

Buddy enjoyed following South Carolina Gamecocks basketball, football, and baseball, and he took great pride in cheering on his teams. Sports were one of the many things that brought him joy, and he loved the excitement, tradition, and camaraderie that came with being a devoted fan. His interests reflected his spirited personality and his appreciation for what brought people together.

Buddy’s life was one of purpose, devotion, and love. He leaves behind a legacy of service to his community, commitment to his family, and a lifetime of memories that will be treasured by all who knew him. His courage, his laughter, and his wisdom will continue to live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
