Listen to Obituary

Richard Clarence Layton, affectionately known as Dickie to his friends and family, passed away on June 12, 2025, at the age of 67 in his hometown of Greenville, South Carolina. Born on September 9, 1957, to the late Clarence "Doc" Layton and Nell Bracken Layton, Dickie was a lifelong resident of Greenville, where he was deeply rooted in the community and touched the lives of many with his kind spirit and generous heart.

Until he retired, Dickie spent his career working alongside his father at Layton Dry Contracting for many years, where he honed his skills and contributed significantly to the family business.

Beyond his professional life, Dickie was an enthusiastic participant in the local racing scene. He raced at numerous tracks around the Greenville area, sharing his passion for the sport with fellow racers and spectators alike. His love for competition was matched only by his devotion to his favorite sports teams, the Clemson Tigers and the Atlanta Braves. Win or lose, Dickie's loyalty to his teams was unwavering, and he could often be found cheering them on, surrounded by friends and family.

Dickie was a faithful member of Forestville Baptist Church in Travelers Rest, South Carolina. His faith was an integral part of his life, and he served his church community with the same commitment and joy that he brought to all his endeavors.

He is survived by his beloved uncle, Blaine Penrick, who fondly remembers Dickie's vibrant personality and the countless memories they shared.

A special thank you is extended to Dickie's friends and neighbors, Nick and Genice Leslie, who provided care and companionship during his final days. Their unwavering support and friendship were a source of great comfort to Dickie and a testament to the close-knit community that he cherished.

Dickie Layton will be remembered for his infectious laugh, his generous spirit, and his ability to make everyone he met feel like family. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew him, and he will be deeply missed by all. As we say goodbye to a man who was much more than the sum of his years, we celebrate a life well-lived and full of love.
