Richard Lang Roddy, known affectionately by friends and family as Dickie, passed away peacefully on January 24, 2026, at the age of 85 in Liberty, South Carolina. Born on July 10, 1940, in Greenville, South Carolina, to the late James and Jeanette Roddy, Dickie's early years were filled with the warmth of a close-knit family and the spirited adventures that would come to define his life.
A proud graduate of Carolina High School's Class of 1958, Dickie's zest for learning and genuine affection for his classmates made him a memorable figure at school reunions. His love for football often found him recounting high school glory days with a twinkle in his eye and a deep appreciation for the camaraderie the sport engendered.
Dickie's adventurous spirit extended far beyond the football field. He was an avid reader, always with a book in hand, ready to explore new worlds and ideas. The outdoors was his sanctuary, with camping trips and beach outings serving as the backdrop for countless family memories. His love for the natural world was infectious, and he passed down this passion to his children and grandchildren, instilling in them a deep respect for the environment.
Family was the cornerstone of Dickie's life. He was a loving brother to his late sister Linda Roddy Lee, his sister Donna (David) Walden, and his brother Benjamin Roddy. His legacy continues through his five children - Amy, Wad, Jim (Michelle), Don (Stacy), and Ken - who will carry forward the values of kindness and love that he exemplified. Dickie's 11 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren were the joy of his later years, and he cherished every moment spent with them.
Described by those who knew him as adventurous, loving, and kind, Dickie was a friend to all. His easy smile and generous spirit drew people to him, and he maintained lifelong friendships that were a source of great pride and comfort to him.
Dickie's life was a testament to the power of kindness and the enduring strength of family bonds. He will be remembered for his ability to make each person he met feel valued, his unwavering support for his loved ones, and his ability to find joy in the simplest of pleasures.
As we bid farewell to Dickie, we celebrate a life well-lived, full of adventure, love, and kindness. His memory will be a beacon for those he has left behind - a reminder to embrace life with open arms and to cherish each moment with the ones we love. Though he has set off on his final adventure, the imprints of his footsteps will forever be etched in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing Richard Lang Roddy.
