The life of Robert Douglas “Doug” Allen, Jr. came to a peaceful end on 16 December 2025 at the age of 82 at Foothills Retirement Community in Easley, SC. He was a native of New Orleans, Louisiana and a longtime resident of Tucker, Georgia before relocating to Greenville, South Carolina to live his latter years close to family. Doug received his bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity.
He spent his long professional career at Lockheed Martin as a structural test engineer evaluating multiple aircraft including the C-5 Galaxy and the P-3 Orion alongside respected coworkers and colleagues. An Eagle Scout who made multiple visits to Philmont, Doug served as Troop 695 Scoutmaster for a decade, and was a proud recipient of the Silver Beaver Award from the Atlanta Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America for his years of volunteer service. Ever the Boy Scout, Doug mobilized with family and church members to deliver aid and help to rehabilitate the landscape of New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina.
Doug taught kindergarten Sunday School for many years, enthusiastically coached the church high school basketball team, and served multiple terms as an elder of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Tucker, GA. At the First Presbyterian Church of Marietta, GA he served as an elder and enjoyed contributing his efforts to renovating facilities for use by the church youth group. Straight on into his fifties, Doug played basketball as a towering center, and he played hard-nosed ball whether he was running the floors in the leagues at Dobbins Air Force Base or playing on the church team at a neighborhood gym. He developed a love for golf in retirement, with weekly rounds accompanied by breakfast with longtime friends.
Blessed with a strong mind for all the elements of engineering, Doug also carried an encyclopedic mental cache of jokes he could deliver in a seemingly endless manner when the occasion presented itself. His easy smile lit up and he was quick to laugh when hearing well delivered lines from his beloved nephew, nieces and grandkids, as well as the wonderful neighbors and friends he cracked wise with through the years. He loved to watch old westerns and monster movies with his brother, Rick. He loved to crank up the music of Eric Clapton, The Rolling Stones, and Joe Cocker while driving or when conducting weekly house cleaning campaigns with his kids Robbie, John, and Mary Christian. Doug and his wife, Marion, enjoyed 58 years of marriage. They traveled the country in retirement to cheer on their grandchildren and visit family, and spent the last five years together at Foothills, talking every day and experiencing life side-by-side until their time together came to an end.
Doug was preceded in death by his father USN Captain Robert Douglas Allen, mother Henrietta Marie Allen, brother Richard John Allen, and son John William Allen. He is survived by his wife Marion Hooker Allen, son Robert Douglas Allen III and wife Melissa, daughter Mary Christian Ferguson and husband Jason; five grandchildren Elias Bentley Allen, Avery Rose Allen,
Marcella Marie Allen, Oivia Deese Allen, and Netta Lucille Ferguson, sister-in-law Eleanor Allen, nephew Gregory Paul Allen and wife Shannon, sister-in-law Mary Callaway and husband Steve, nieces Wendy Carpenter and husband Charlie and Amy Hathcock and husband Greg.
Doug was a wonderful man who showed us all how to be kind and tough, ready and capable.
