Robert "Larry" Gillespie, Sr., a cherished family man, respected Air Force veteran, and dedicated former firefighter, passed away at his home on December 24, 2024, at the age of 74. Born on June 16, 1950, in Greenville, SC, Larry was a beacon of love and kindness to all who knew him.
Larry's life was marked by his unwavering commitment to his family and community. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 53 years, Gina F. Gillespie, his parents, Charles Gillespie and Marjorie Price, his brother Henry Gillespie and leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion. His memory will be forever cherished by his children, Angie Gillespie (Brett), Dianne Brewer (Wendell), and Robert L. Gillespie, Jr. "Tiger"; his adored grandchildren, Robynn, Bryanna, Khristian, Reice, and Shea; his great-grandchildren, Emmah Grace, Jeremiah, Georgia Marie, and Brayleigh; and his great-great-grandchildren, Sailor and Smith. Larry is also survived by his sisters, Lucy Casio (Nick), Janice, Pam G. Pelt, and his brother, Tony Gillespie, all of whom will miss his presence deeply.
Larry proudly served his country as an Air Force veteran, a chapter of his life that instilled in him a sense of duty and honor that he carried throughout his days. After his military service, he continued to protect and serve as a firefighter, a role that showcased his bravery and selflessness. His work history and association involvement were a testament to his dedication to helping others and ensuring the safety of his community.
Beyond his service, Larry was a man of many interests. He found joy in the simple pleasures of life, such as spending time with his family, playing golf, and indulging in his passion for tinkering. His love for yard work was evident in the meticulous care he took of his garden, and his talent for craftsmanship shown through in the beautiful birdhouses he made, which are cherished by many.
Larry was the epitome of a loving, kind, and handy individual. His hands, always ready to build or fix, were equally as ready to embrace a loved one or offer comfort. His warm smile and generous spirit were infectious, and he had the unique ability to make everyone around him feel valued and loved.
As we bid farewell to Larry, we celebrate a life well-lived, full of meaningful moments and lasting contributions. He was a pillar of strength for his family, a loyal friend, and a respected member of his community. Larry's legacy will live on in the hearts of those he touched, and his example of love, kindness, and service will continue to inspire for generations to come.
