Roderick Dean Smith, known affectionately as Dean to his friends and family, passed away on September 12, 2025, at the age of 57, in Spartanburg, SC. Born on April 9, 1968, in Charleston, SC, Dean was a man whose zest for life and indomitable spirit left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
Dean is survived by his loving wife, Jennifer Lynn Smith, whom he married on October 9, 2004. Together, they raised two wonderful sons, Sam and Jake Smith, who carry on his legacy of kindness and strength. Dean was the cherished son of Roderick Ira Smith of Charleston, SC, and the late Barbara Ewing Smith. He was a supportive and fun-loving brother to Kevin Bristol Smith of Mt. Pleasant, SC, who is married to Emily and his niece, Harley Smith.
A proud graduate of Bishop England High School, Class of 1986, Dean's academic and athletic prowess earned him a full basketball scholarship to Furman University, where he graduated in 1990. His passion for sports was a constant throughout his life, both on and off the court.
Dean's professional life was dedicated to the construction equipment rental industry, where he built a reputation for his work ethic and integrity. His career spanned several well-known companies, including Hertz Equipment Rental Corporation, The Home Depot, Ameco (a division of Fluor), and United Rentals. Despite being diagnosed with Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis at a young age, Dean never allowed it to define him or hinder his ability to enjoy life and make a difference in his community.
Dean's interests were as varied as they were passionate. He was a devoted family man who always put his loved ones first. Known for his unique ability to give everyone a nickname, Dean's presence was a source of comfort and joy. His smile was a beacon of positivity, and he made a point to maintain connections with those around him. Music was a significant part of his life, with Pearl Jam topping his list of favorite bands, though his playlist was as diverse as his interests.
An avid sports enthusiast, Dean relished the excitement of football season and enjoyed watching all sports on television. He shared his love for basketball by coaching youth teams at the YMCA, inspiring young athletes with his dedication and sportsmanship. Golf and poker were among his favorite pastimes, and he was always up for a friendly game with friends.
The ocean held a special place in Dean's heart. He cherished the times spent fishing and snorkeling in the Keys, especially near the seven-mile bridge by Sunshine Key. This spot was a favorite retreat for Dean and Jennifer, where they enjoyed snorkeling for lobsters and stone crabs at the "boy scout camp."
Dean's life was a testament to the words loving, adventurous, and courageous. He faced every challenge with a brave heart and a smile, inspiring those around him to do the same. His memory will be treasured by all who had the privilege of knowing him, and his spirit will continue to guide us in the years to come.
