Ruth Florence McKinnon, known to many simply as Ruth, passed away on October 28, 2026, in Greenville, South Carolina, at the age of 95.

Born on November 4, 1930, in Quebec, Canada, Ruth lived a long and full life marked by love, laughter, and a spirited approach to everything she did. She was the daughter of the late Charles and Louisa Petts and carried the values of hard work, resilience, and kindness throughout her life. Those who knew her will remember her as a loving, adventurous, and spirited woman whose presence brought warmth and joy to family and friends alike.

Ruth began her professional life working for CNR, where she was part of a dynamic and evolving chapter in the world of media. Later in life, she worked as a retail manager, a role in which her strong work ethic, good judgment, and people skills served her well. In every career she pursued, Ruth brought dedication and a sense of responsibility that earned the respect of those around her.

Outside of work, Ruth embraced life with enthusiasm and energy. She was an avid sports fan and enjoyed participating in many sports over the years, including curling, badminton, and cross-country skiing. She appreciated the challenge, camaraderie, and fun that came with being active, and she carried that same sense of enjoyment into all areas of her life. Her love of sports reflected her adventurous spirit and her willingness to try new things.

Music was also an important part of Ruth’s life. She sang with the Sweet Adelines for many years, finding joy in the friendships, harmony, and shared passion that came with being part of the group. Her voice and her presence added to the lives of those around her, and she treasured the experiences and memories that came from those years of singing. Ruth also had a wonderful sense of humor, and she was known for being funny in a way that could brighten even the most ordinary day.

Ruth was predeceased by her beloved husband, Joseph Herbert McKinnon. Their life together was a meaningful part of her story, and she carried his memory with her always. She is survived by her children, Ken McKinnon; Heather Heath and her husband Harold; Cindy Kelly and her husband Vernon; Lynda McKinnon; and Bryan McKinnon and his husband John. She also leaves behind 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, all of whom were a source of great pride and joy in her life.

Family was central to Ruth’s world, and she will be remembered for the love she gave so freely to those closest to her. Her children and grandchildren knew her as a steady, caring, and encouraging presence, and her legacy will live on in the many lives she touched. She shared her affection, humor, and strength generously, and those gifts will continue to be felt for generations to come.

Ruth’s life was one of purpose, movement, and heart. She met each stage of life with grace and determination, and she leaves behind a legacy defined by devotion, laughter, and an enduring love of life. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her.
