Sallie Mae Marshall Hughes, affectionately known as Mae, passed away on May 1, 2026. Born on November 13, 1937, in Abbeville, SC. Mae lived a life marked by love, kindness, and dedication to her family and community.
Mae devoted much of her professional life to Cone Mills, where she retired after years of service. Beyond her career, she was a cherished member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church, where her faith and commitment were sources of strength and inspiration to all who knew her. Mae's love for reading, gardening and gospel music enriched her spirit and brought joy throughout her life.
Mae was preceded in death by her parents, R.L. and Willie Mae Marshall, her husband, Joseph Hughes, her siblings, Robert "Toy" Marshall and Olivia Holcy, and by her grandchild, Courtney Marshall. Their memories remain deeply cherished in the hearts of their family.
A loving matriarch, Mae treasured her family above all else. She is survived by her eight children: Priscilla Marshall (Malcolm), Charity Bonds (Michael), Sherry Dirton, Shirley McKenzie (Charlie), Demarcus Marshall, Karen Marshall, Jacqueline Marshall, and Renette Smith (Wayne), and her brother, William "Baby" Marshall. Her legacy continues through twenty-two grandchildren, along with several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, who will carry her memory forward with affection and respect.
Known for her loving and kind nature, Sallie Mae Marshall Hughes touched the lives of many and leaves behind a lasting imprint of warmth, faith, and devotion. Her family, friends, and church community will hold her memory close, celebrating a life well lived and a soul dearly loved.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 P.M., on Friday, May 8, 2026, at the Cremation Society of SC - Westville Funerals, 6010 White Horse Rd, Greenville, SC 29611. A burial will follow the service at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens, 1655 Piedmont Hwy, Piedmont, SC 29673.
