Sherry Lee Goman Gillum

July 4, 1947 — May 20, 2024

Greenville, SC

Sherry Lee Goman Gillum, an example of kindness and faith, passed away at her home in Greenville, SC, on May 20, 2024. Born on July 4, 1947, in Columbus, OH, Sherry's life was a testament to her spirit and her dedication to serving others wherever God placed her.

Sherry's early years in Columbus were marked by academic achievement and community involvement. At Whetstone High School, she was an active member of the National Honor Society, the Christian Youth Fellowship, and the Future Teachers of America. Her commitment to education led her to Bob Jones University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. It was there that she met the love of her life, Robert (Bob) Lyerly Gillum. The two were united in marriage and later blessed with a son, Jonathan David Gillum, who became the center of Sherry's world.

Before dedicating herself to motherhood, Sherry worked at Bob Jones University, where she touched the lives of many students and colleagues. Her devotion to her family was admirable, and she was a constant source of love and support for her husband and son. Sherry's parents, Earl W. Goman and Viola Ferne Snedecor Goman, as well as her brothers, Earl Kent Goman and Roderick David Goman, predeceased her, but she kept their memory alive through her stories of them.

Throughout her life, Sherry maintained close ties with her extended and adoptive family in Ohio, cherishing the bonds she formed with them after her mother's passing. Her family-by-marriage also held a special place in her heart, and she nurtured these relationships with the same care and attention she gave to her immediate family. Sherry's presence on Facebook was a daily reminder of her commitment to staying connected with friends and family, sharing moments of joy, comfort, and inspiration.

Sherry's faith was the cornerstone of her existence. She was a faithful member of Tabernacle Baptist Church in Greenville, SC. However, her ministry extended beyond the church walls, as she witnessed throughout the community, sharing her testimony, and passing out fliers for church events. Sherry was kindhearted and often reached out to neighbors and friends in need, embodying the essence of Christian love and charity.

Her interests reflected her compassionate nature. Sherry was deeply involved in cat rescue, foster, and adoption efforts, working with organizations such as Concerned Citizens for Animals, Feline Lifeline, and Foster Paws Rescue. Her dedication to these causes saved countless feline lives and brought joy to many families.

Sherry's love for inspirational music provided her with comfort, often filling her home with melodies that uplifted her spirit.

Those who knew Sherry will remember her as faith-filled, friendly, and kind. She was a woman who strived to live her beliefs, to see the good in everyone, and to leave the world a better place. Her memory will be cherished by her beloved husband of 53 years, Bob; her son, Jonathan; and the countless lives she touched with her gentle spirit and generous heart.

Sherry Lee Goman Gillum's journey on earth has ended, but her story continues in the lives of those she loved and served. As we bid farewell to this woman of faith, we take solace in the knowledge that her legacy of love will be remembered.
