Shirley J. Makara, 92, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Thursday, January 22, 2026 at the McCall Hospice House of Greenville.

Born in Canton, Ohio, she was the eldest daughter of the late Herman and Jeanette Josephine Dobbs Boldt. She worked in US government offices for more than thirty years eventually retiring from the United States Social Security Administration Greenville office.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Martin L. “Mac” Makara, in addition to her parents, two brothers-in-law George Waldrep Jr. and Fred Townsend, and nephew Bryon Townsend.

Survivors are her son, Martin L. Makara, Jr. and his husband, Jerry W. Henry, of Greenville SC; two sisters, Lynda Waldrep of Summerfield NC and Carole Townsend of Greenville SC; four nieces Vicki Townsend and Susan Townsend-Williams and her husband Jay Williams of Greenville SC, Lyndsey Waldrep of Crossville TN, and Kathleen Kapes of Weston PA; three nephews, Larry Supon of Weston PA, Mark Townsend of Greer SC, and George Waldrep III of Lewisburg PA.

Additionally, she is survived by two great-nieces and their husbands: Danni and Neal Caldwell, and Sydney and Seth Butler of Greenville SC; and two great-nephews, Rusty Townsend and his wife Janea of Atlanta GA and Matthew Williams of Greenville SC.
