IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Sula Mae Messer
Cox
June 2, 1931 – February 14, 2026
Sula Mae Messer Cox, a devoted mother, grandmother, sister and friend, passed away peacefully on February 14, 2026, at the age of 94.
Born on June 2, 1931, Sula dedicated her life to caring for her family and creating a warm, welcoming home. She found deep joy in the simple, meaningful rhythms of everyday life. Her kitchen was always open, her table always set for one more, and her heart always ready to listen. She was employed by Woven Electronics for more than 25 years.
Sula was widowed in 1980 after 25 loving years of marriage to her husband, William Cox, whom she missed dearly but carried in her heart every day. Together they built a life rooted in faith, love, and community. She was a faithful member of Rocky Creek Baptist Church, Greenville, SC.
Flowers were Sula’s passion. Her garden was her sanctuary—a vibrant tapestry of lilies, hydrangeas, and seasonal blooms that she nurtured with patience and care. She believed that tending a garden was an act of love and she shared cuttings, bouquets, and gardening advice generously with neighbors and friends.
Sula is survived by her son, Fred Cox. daughter, Shelia Rishel (Steve), five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, sisters Joyce Fowler and Jean Lister and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased in death by her infant son, Gregory, parents Alma and Clarence Messer, brothers Kenneth, Shervin and Lewis Messer and great-0granddaughter Sophie Grace Rishel.
She will be remembered for her gentle hands, her unwavering faith, and the beauty she cultivated both in her garden and in the lives of those who knew her.
A graveside service celebrating Sula’s life will be held at Rocky Creek Baptist Church, 1801 Woodruff Rd, Greenville, SC 29607, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests planting something beautiful in her memory.
